There is a lot of not answering the question going on in here. Sometimes it is right to try and guide someone's perspective if we view their question as being rooted in incorrect assumptions. But sometimes it is right to give them the plain answers that they have asked for. Even if their sudden appearance on the Café with such a detailed question raises suspicions as to whether they are a genuine poster or a troll or a secondary account created for nefarious purposes...
So, Shad0w99 (a curious moniker!), it's very nice that you have a large budget. Good for you. But over the years of learning this art, I've discovered that price tags on Mentalism effects and books are rarely an indicator of value. I've overspent on things that turn out to be very limited, and I've received the most mind-altering works of art for a pittance. It can be hard to know what is worth your time and effort and what is not. Even the reviews of products available online tend to be quite overstated at times. In the context you've presented, my number one suggestion would be to purchase the book Switchcraft by Elliott Bresler. This is an example of low price for amazing material. $30 will buy you an ever-expanding ebook that currently tops 500 pages, and Mr Bresler sends out updates and additions to all owners of the book at no further cost as he writes them. Billet work in a restaurant walk-around is versatile enough for just about everything you need if you have the time to put into practising it. As others have mentioned, that leaves you with $2970 to use at your discretion!

Does it have to be mentalism? If not, I'd recommend some of the classics of magic like cups and balls, chop cup, linking rings (ninja rings), sponge balls and some card tricks. Packet tricks are good, too. One of the first things I bought in a magic store 37 or so years ago was color monte and I still love to perform it. You could also do some gambling scams, three card monte, three shell game, loopy loop and spot the spot.
If it has to be mentalism then ... what a lot of other people have said about buying some books, learning secret writing, and using billets. There are some great DVDs on mentalism and mental magic, too. Readings may be your best bet since they are always different and most people are really interested in them. If you don't already know how, learn to use a pendulum. They are useful for readings and 'tricks.' I doubt that your customers, who have known you for a long time, will believe that you have suddenly become a mind reader, so you will likely be doing mental magic tricks (or that's how they'll be perceived anyway). Good luck and have a good time. I don't think you need to spend all the money you have, though it wouldn't be hard to. |

I'd recommend purchasing:
Max Maven's Videomind (DVD) Collection $100 Practical Mental Magic by Theodore Annemann (Book) $13 13 Steps to Mentalism by Corinda - Book $25 together with 13 Steps To Mentalism (6 DVDs) by Richard Osterlind - DVD $90 Then go to Office Depot (like Bob Cassidy says) and get the materials. With the remaining money, take some time off, learn, and practice, practice, practice. P.S., next time I'm on the coast, I'll pop in for a visit. Just PM'ed you.

If you really want to entertain long-term, another idea might be to take $2,500 and hire a magician/mentalist for a few days to sit down with you and learn about your performing style and your performing limitations. Then they can teach you not only a bunch of effects but they can help build your arsenal of techniques AND explain how you can take a single technique and translate that into a bunch of different effects. Finally, based on their new knowledge of your performing style and setting they can recommend books and DVDs that will work for you without having to fumble through a lot of missteps. That last $500 can be used for those recommended books and DVDs.
Granted, it's not as sexy as some of those shiny new toys, but in the long run it's a lot more practical and will ultimately provide you with far more material.

What you're after doesn't happen quickly but if you're passionate for performing you'll read and practice and enjoy the process.
When I'm helping behind my friend's magic counter and a guy asks where he should begin, I don't ask him to spend $3, 000. Instead, I direct him to Bob Cassidy's "39 Steps" article at lybrary.com after I sell him Annemann's Practical Mental Effects and Corinda's 13 Steps. Bob's Fundamentals ebook is what I should be selling him but I can't; it's an ebook. If he seems too impatient to read at first, I might direct him to Osterlind's wonderful ETMMM DVDs (if I help him at all. Often if someone's reluctant to read, I'm reluctant to help. It's just about pointless to be a mentalist who won't read, besides, I don't like casting pearls to swine or creating local competition. I might just sell the guy a stripper deck and entrench him in magic as his hobby.) It sounds like you'll be doing magic tricks along with mental magic? I'd try to go completely mental; the reactions will be stronger. Keep the sponge balls at home. To get informed about performing mental magic for kids, I'd also buy Paul Rohmany's book, Performing Mentalism for Young Minds. Everyone aged 5 and up can enjoy mental magic, even if you're only telling them which colored crayon they've hidden. You may decide to become a mentalist, that is, to change your persona. Until you've done that you may not get the reactions you want.

Some mentioned learning a reading system. I think this is a good idea, but maybe difficult to just jump into. If you are interested in trying them I would recommend Paul Voodini's Palm which is a booklet and DVD set that teaches basic palm readings and how to combine the with magic tricks you probably know already to give them a completely different feel. The basic concepts can then be applied to the stuff you are already doing and will be different each time.

Learn some metal bending, and yes buy MD from Craig, your punters will love it. Also Osterlind's ETMMM dvd set and his MM's set will see you thru for a few years.
Oh and the three bottle caps with the hidden object in Bryan Reynolds Safwan Papers is excellent. |

One effect that might be good for you is Card on the Ceiling depending on the type of ceiling you have. If you have a drop ceiling with tiles, it's not going to work. But, if it's a solid flat ceiling it will. Have guest sign a card and you find it by tossing the deck up to the ceiling and there the card sticks...and stays...for all to look at. When they come back to show their friends, it'll still be there.
Who knows maybe some romantic will even "sign" his name, "Will you marry me" for his girlfriend and that will be one card to talk about for a long time. Heck, one night just toss one of those up on the ceiling and then tell the story of how some out of town guests were here and that's how the guy proposed.

The guy simply asked for some advice on what to buy. He didn't ask how to run his business. He already knows how to do that. Give him a break.
Give him some ideas. I'd look at some mick Ayres shows. Classic stuff with a deck of cards. |

Agree with John C. Give him what he requested.
My recommendation is Multi Dimensional Colour - from promystic. This allows you to give a reading as well as wowing them by divining the colour. I have got more mileage out of this than anything I have ever purchased. I also have 2 other promystic products so if the OP wishes to pm me to find out how I use these, please feel free to do so. |

I may be a little dim, but if you don't expect to generate more business or income, as in your own words most locals hang out here anyway, then why spend $3,000? By all means buy the toys you want
for your own entertainment and enjoyment, but I think you really need to ask yourself who are you buying this stuff for. Almost all of the previous posts query the huge spend as the more experienced posters all agree that cost does not equal entertainment value. So here is an off the wall suggestion. Use your budget to pay for overnight expenses for any visiting performers willing to drop in, dine with you, brainstorm ideas, perform a few tricks for the locals and enjoy a little Oregon hospitality. You get to benefit from the variety, and your customers get exposed to lots of different styles of magic and mentalism. Your $3K would help the local hostelry income and pay you back in experience three fold. Only problem here is you don't get any shiny new toys.....

Dusty I think the op knows all that. He wants what he wants. What's wrong with that?
He has some money he wants to buy some stuff. There's plenty of stuff to buy. Maybe it is for him. Isn't what we all buy for us? If we all just used paper and pencils where would our industry be? And we don't all just use paper and pencils. I UNDERSTAND WE CAN but the reality is that we all don't. I don't just use paper and pencils. I could but I don't. J |

Gday mate,
Great post, a long time ago I used to work for quite a few restaurant owners and I mostly performed card magic and it works quite well. I think your budget of $3,000 might be a little on the high side. Unless you are looking to do a stage show then I can think of some expensive little toys for you to invest in (pm me about those if you are keen), otherwise I suggest you should just learn some sleight of hand and off you go There has already been many great suggestions, nowadays I find that a simple card trick can get amazing reactions, just focus on your showmanship and how you perform it! Good luck! I love how you are creating more of an atmosphere in your business, well done mate

I have not tried it, but people have been raving about this: http://www.promystic.com/evolution.html
You obviously have the money for it. Also check out x-act which is a really easy CAAN. Also, check out this: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&start=0 It is full of win! Also, for mentalism you might look into http://www.lulu.com/shop/atlas-brookings......925.html It requires a lot of memorization but the possibilities are limitless and with the right presentation you really will be the local Gandalf! |
