As one who has performed/demonstrated Helstromism for more than 55 years, I offer a thought that may not be well received.
The potential of this approach is incredible. When you are suddenly able to complete the actions after dropping the physical contact become a "real paranormal experience" for all involved. but then, how do you follow up? Once you have demonstrated that ability every other demonstration can seem "watered down." The second problem is to achieve this special level of empathic or gestalt connection you must have complete focus and attention and engagement of the audience. Today this is very difficult to orchestrate. No cell phones or external attachment of any type. A commitment to maybe 40 minutes of uninterrupted time. I am sure there are others who can be effective and entertaining with less strict conditions -- but that is where the risk comes in. I have NEVER failed in such a demonstration and do not intend to. Of course, I am not trying to make a living from mentalism. If I were I would not perform the effect.

I was blown away the first time I saw contact mind reading. It took me a very long time to reach the point where I was able to make it work most of the time. There is a moment -- at least for me there was a moment -- when you suddenly get "it." After that, I've found that I can make it work the vast majority of the time.
I've read the Satori book...but I liked Banachek's book better. And the very best book of all came from Richard Osterlind. I am not sure whether or not you are still looking in on this thread -- but it is the best resource I've seen. A remarkable work, concise and clear in its instruction. It really is as close to real mind reading as possible. Oddly -- the weakness is the fact that it is TOO good. Does that make sense? Even though the performer is not stooging the volunteer in any way, that is the assumption made by the audience. I've got the idea that a certain segment of the audience thinks that the "guide" is secretly helping the performer...even when it isn't true. It's actually gotten to the point where I need to slow it down in order to make it believable. I highly recommend Osterlind's book...but the bottom line is that you have to work it. You have to do it and work with it. You have to fail a number of times until it makes sense. The odd thing is that this is also an effect that you CAN rehearse with family and friends and hone your skills. It's a great journey, though. David

The best, simplest and most direct instructions I have ever seen for CR work are in The Mental Mysteries and Other Writings of William W. Larsen, Sr.

I think, the best to develop and sharpen your skills is from the grandmaster Hanussen. He guides you through learning process and there are so many good, workable things described, like non contact mind reading, find out thought of numbers, letters, a booktest and so much more. And everything with the help of muscle reading.
Though, it's true, that the audience can make assumptions that what they see is too good to be true. You need to really sell your act, as always in mentalism.

I have read Satori's book the Secrets of Contact Mindreading, it's a very thorough book but really nothing tops experience. I also found many people over complicated the explanation of CM but it is easy once you know what you are looking for, its all just practice. Mind you I am no Kreskin but really I really got better at CM after some one showed me what to look for.

It is normal to incorporate CMR practise into show, and practise CMR only in that way. I don't have any friends to practise with.

I think Banachek's video, book and what the late Bob Cassidy suggested,The Mental Mysteries and Other Writings of William W. Larsen, are far better sources for you
They show you step by step what to do to get really good at CMR

Hanussen, Fitzkee, Carlisle, Satori, Banachek--whatever book you get they all have one thing in common: they are very short. That's because there's not much to a CMR tutorial. Teaching how CMR works takes a page, maybe two. The bulk of the pages in all those books are about the history of CMR and routine ideas. Once you've learned the basic premise of how CMR works the rest is down to just doing it. You could honestly get started with what's been discussed in this thread alone.
Three pieces of advice that will get you up to speed much faster: 1) Have a good pre-talk. The participant needs to *will* you in the correct direction, they can't just envision the thought. A good CMR book will brief you on what the participant needs to know before starting. 2) Use many different participants. Even in the same trial if you have to. If one sender isn't working out, thank them and bring someone else up. Eventually someone will work. 3) Always have a blindfold ready. This is a universal out in case you are just not getting the thought. If you've already swapped about about two or three senders, it's time for the blindfold. |

Of course there's no way to tell for sure, but I'm skeptical whether or not we are seeing actual CMR in this program. There are multiple camera cuts and no way to tell what exactly was observed by the live audience, so it could be real. But what makes me most suspicious is the mind reader's lack of checks. It's very important, once you believe you've found the target, to overshoot. If the sender brings you back, you've reached the target. This doesn't appear to happen with the chosen item or chosen audience member. A few additional factors raise my suspicion too: - Lack of proper instructions given to the sender - Target item was written down before test - Target audience member was identified before test - Blindfold was worn the entire time The lack of target checking and lack of sender instructions are the most suspicious things to me because they are so vital for successful CMR. It's possible that these things occurred off camera or that the performer knew the sender would be so strong ahead of time that these steps weren't necessary. So this very well could be real CMR. But for anyone looking to get started, it is vitally important to check the target and to brief your participant. Nonetheless, that is still a great performance to watch. Thank you for sharing. It looks like a great way to practice CMR and/or a great way to perform CMR with a guaranteed outcome. |

I know most of you are only concerned with the entertainment aspect of mental based demonstrations, so I have avoided sharing this experience,
but the only witness to this action has passed away and my agreement not to reveal the circumstances no longer binding. I was 16 and had performed several Helstromism demonstrations in addition to conjuring and and "other than normal" phenomenon. A family friend in her 60's then asked for my help. She could not remember where her late husband was buried. She had gone out to the cemetery but could not find the marker in the overgrown grass and was quite distraught - but also did not want others to know she could not remember. I went out with her and her daughter and used 'muscle reading" to find it -- for she actually did know where it was on a subconscious level. Mind reading at various levels is possible when dealing with people in real life -- possible they enjoy watching you because of some real-life experience.
