Regardless of how you personally think a pendulum works – or what story you tell when performing, it is about observable movement. A minute about of movement of tiny muscles, hand or body translate into visible swings and twirls. In fact, the pendulum is rarely still. Walking or gesturing can send the pendulum into wild gyrations.
So, there is the challenge – if you wish to gain mastery over a single or multi-bob pendulum. Practice making the pendulum NOT MOVE as you walk about the room, sit and even change hands. Try it with eyes open for bio-feedback, and with eyes shut and other senses in control. Make it a New Year’s goal. Master silence.

You mean coffee in one hand and pendulum in the other? How about on a unicycle?
Seriously, I teach a similar approach in Trybil and DBB. The pendulum section begins with "Stillness" and only then is it followed by "Movement." I like your addition of maintaining stillness while active, eyes open and closed. That adds a whole other dimension. And your references to silence remind me of the practice Richard Osterlind advocates in a couple of his books. His approach is to be aware and make as little noise as you can as you go about your day. Not a vow of silence but it is a very useful tool when it comes to achieving and teaching mindfulness. |

It's kind of like David Carradine trying to walk on rice paper in the TV show Kung Fu. Be mindful in everything you do...
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.
