I'm considering on buying a fountain of silks because I like the effect, but wonder if I'd get tired of having to refold the silks every time I did the effect.
Has anyone here quit doing the effect because of this? Chris |

Ask the audience! They love it. You know that you can easily make your own?

The silk fountain has been a "standard" part of my opening for several years. With use, you get faster at the folding process, to my audience they think it's worth the effort. I have NO plans of taking this great effect out of my show!

Yes, it's worth the effort. But in all honesty, it's not much effort at all.
And remember, once you've displayed the fountain, you've got a LOT of cover for a production or steal. Some of the prettiest and most artistic moments in Magic!....And per Bob Sanders' post above, if you make your own, your can control the color flows, finale, etc. any way you want. |

I've used it and found that the audiences love it. Think it through, with all those silks you can easily make a steal. You just have to come up with something to steal. It does get easier to fold with use. Why buy when you can make your own for less.

Bob, I was always under the impression that it cost about the same to buy or make one (to do it right). I'd love to make one. I need to look into this.

I've made several.
It is worth the trouble to design your own but every time you make one you think of a design improvement for the next time. LOL Fountain of Silks is always a hit! You can fold it the night before and there aren't too many Silk effects like that. I know some people don't enjoy folding the Silk but (if your hands aren't snaggy) there is real pleasure in the feel and bright color of silk. Silk has a big role in history and is interesting in a scientific sense as well. Figuring out different folds that will introduce the color all at once or blended with the next one and playing with the display of the cover silk(s) to display the best and hide the most are all fun. Get into it. It is like holding fireworks. Enjoy the eye candy. -Mary Mowder |

Ask Mr. Electric (Marvyn Roy) if folding all those silks was worth it. Just something to think about.

Marvyn always told me most magicians are too lazy to do silk magic due to the small amount of work involved. That would be the very reason to do it.
I have always done a silk fountain in my act and always will. You can make your own but do youself a favor and think a little bit about the color scheme. You don't want colors hopping all over the place. A nice chromatic progression is a much more pleasing display. I made one last year for a performer with 60 silks and variety of shading of the main colors. It really was quite stunning. Richard

I agree with color choice being very important. I once saw a Magician do the fountain using only blue silks. The fountain was made with different shades of blue and looked spectacular.

There is a secret (well mot s secret0 way to get the audience to really appreciate a fountain of silks.
The secret -- do mnot rush. Do not shake hard and fast and just dump it. Let the "blossom" develop slowly - turn to cover all the audience (bacl and forth) as it opens slowly -- and make sure it is seen by all bringing it next to your face -- do not cover your face -- the need to re ember both you and the trick. Slow and steady it the pace (as it will seem to you) but it will fly by for the audiemnce.

It is well worth the small amount of time for set up. The audience reaction is priceless. I have a festival I do ever year. It is 16 shows over two weekends with each show being 30 minutes every two hours so I have very little time to set up my silk act. However it is wort the time and effort and I havent't been late to start a show yet.

I have been thinking for the last couple of months about doing a silk and production act. I was looking for ideas and never even thought about the silk fountain. I know the silks from Bob are really great. He sent me a 20th Century about 2 or 3 years ago. The silks are very bright and very easy to handle. Ok are the instructions in the Rice books? Seems like I have a book with them in it but can't remember. Any thank you for these posts because now it has my creative thoughts going.

Yes you will get tired of folding the silks, but it is worth it. I did this five times a day six days a week during the magic show I did at Magic Mountain. It was a great climax to my solo set. I spent most of my break getting all of the silks folded it up and the dancing cane set up. And I had to time it all before I went on because I used an appearing cane inside of it and I didn't want the cane in the closed position too long.
As I look at the only memory I have and that is the VHS tape of the show, I say that it was all worth it. |

The big silk fountain was 36, 24, and 18 ending in a 90". It was huge.
Dale Salwak has had me make his silks for years. It is primarily shades of blue and purples with a few other colors. Once you get the routine down you can fold the silks up pretty fast for resets. Richard

WOW! That is BIG! Salwak's silk fountain is a thing of beauty. Dale is a class act. I remember loving the colors in his silk fountain. The only other artistic silk fountains I have seen the past few years are Yumi's....she used shades of green, I believe... |
