How many calls a month do you get from your yellow page ad alone? Do you know what that figure might be? Just curious to know.

Pretty soon I'll be known as the "Marketing Magician."

I get 12 - 40 calls a month. It varies throughout the year. The most calls come in the summer time. The slower months are November and January.

Let me know what your yellow pages charge. Just curious to know.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for the ton of questions. I just had never done a yellow pages ad and figured since you currently have done it and are in the states, it would be best to ask you. Thanks so much for the information.

That is not a bad rate for an ad at all. What is the percentage of calls that actually end up in bookings?

I will let you know what our yellow page rates are once I look more into it. My current project is getting my web site designed and up and running. Will be a couple weeks yet but I am getting there.

I find that being a designer, I can design others web sites and logos with ease but when it comes to designing my own, it becomes quite an ordeal. hehe

You will get a lot of calls from the proverty areas, but no appovals. The wealthy areas will not call. The medium income areas is where I get mosot of my calls from. Those are also the ones who are most interested in a magic show. Remember it is against the law to insert the flyer/handbill in a mail box. Insert the flyers in the door or wrap a rubber band around the flyer placing it on a door knob.
Beware when trying this technique. I know from myself, and from my experience on my Homeowner's Association Board... MANY people view this as no better than littering. (And quite often it ends up being truly littering, given a gust of wind, or someone who doesn't take it into the trash where it belongs as they open their door...) I personally NEVER use ANY service that uses this 'strategy'. I have even gone so far as to 'clean up the litter' from my entire neighborhood. The many "thank you"s I got as I walked around collecting 123 leaflets is all the proof I need to know that I am not the only one who is not fond of finding papers in the front door.

Some people use this means, and may even be successful with it. To me, it demeans magic (IMHO). Puts us right there with the pizza and Chinese takeout guys, and the gutter cleaners.

JesterMan, I could not agree more. The scattergun approach is bad marketing.

I also agree that I would not try the above approach. I never liked it much for the same reason why I always hated flyers on car windshields. I think there are much better and more effective ways of marketing. Just my own humble opinion.

A lot of people don't like the method. Some of the ones who don't like it have a note posted on his/her porch, "No handbills."

Some cities have a law against doing it. Most cities it is legal.

The federal and state governments are more on the business owners side because it can help create more taxes.

Too funny. Now to get back to the topic at hand.

What other methods have people used to break into a new market? Has anyone done postcard mailings?

What things have you done at the gig to help market yourself as best as you could?

Can you tell me some of the things that you did when you were starting out or breaking into a new market? What types of marketing did you do and what seemed to get you the best results. Of course you ahd talked about the yellow pages ad already and flyers. Were there any other things you did besides those that seemed to work well?

I made my own flyers. When I needed more prospects, I bought business names labels from a marketing company.

You bought what? I am not sure I am understanding you. When you needed more prospects or leads you did what from a marketing company?

It's a marketing business I contact. They can sell you business labels, dvds, or listings with all types of prospects. For example: new business in your area, residencial names and addresses, daycare centers directors names and phone numbers, businesses with over 500 workers, etc. I always deal it. It is listed in Omaha, NE.

That sounds great. I have never heard of such a service. But those lists and information would be a huge help. Does the one you use have information all over the US or just in your local? Can you give me any specifics in regards to the company you use or how I might find such a company?
