Sam, in advertising to schools and other places that you take credit cards, use the MasterCard/Visa logo and not just the Paypal or other card service logo. Saying you accept Paypal, Square, or some other type online payment can send the reader thinking the wrong way. Because many do believe they have to sign up for an account if they pay with Paypal, Square, or one of the other online card companies. A simple "we accept credit cards," should be enough. And using the MasterCard and Visa logo with tell the world you are a 'real' business like the store down the street.
But be warned, accepting credit cards is going to cost you money. It doesn't sound like much but over time those small fees will add up to a sizeable amount. Credit cards can make it easier for some to pay, but it's not a deal breaker with most. Tom

If you do all of your signing up online, they'll send the reader for free. I've been using Square for a few years now and absolutely love it. Kevin

Tom- yea that is why I am still a cash and check biz. I don't want to be paying fees.
the only reason I would even get this card reader so that I can take cards is a convenience for one particular client group that book me every summer and they have about 30-50 places that book me. as I mentioned before we took cards but never advertised it and really only took them for this one client. I have no intention of announcing I take cards in the near future. if I am asked or the situation arises then yea ill take it but for now just for this client. its worth it for 30-50 shows. thanks again for all the advice everyone. sam

Sam,
Just an idea, but to offset fees, I just raised prices. Literally, the day I started accepting credit card, even though the fees were minimal, I raised my prices $10/show, JUST for the purpose of covering the credit card fees. Business went up, and I'm super happy I started accepting them. The last square reader I ordered from Square, they also sent me a free VISA/MASTERCARD decal to stick in my "shop window," advertising that I accept credit cards. Hope it works out well for you! Sam, it does sound to me like Square is what you need. I don't have it but it does look good. I just got a feeling Square would be seen as a normal card processing company better than Paypal. Nothing wrong with Paypal, I've had an account with them for many years, never a problem. But I think many do view Paypal as something you only use for online purchases. So yes, Square might fit in the 'real' world a little better.
I think I'm going to get a Square reader myself, just to have one. I don't take credit cards in my daycare business anymore and it didn't affect business when I stopped. But still, a card reader would be good to have for my other dealings. Anyway, good luck with it and the new show. Tom

Used to be that if you go into the Apple Store, you could get your Square for $10 right then and there, no waiting and then they would give you a $10 Apple Gift Card… not sure if they still do, so if ‘TIME’ is a consideration, you can look into that.
Too… the consideration too is “How MUCH Volume” you are or may be running though your processor… the math has to work as well. For small volume amounts, Square, PayPal… etc are fine. If you beak a certain point then getting a ‘Merchant Account Reader/Processor’ may be a more intelligent (economically) way to go. Just some food for thought… nothin’ beats good economics! If ‘TIME’ is a consideration and the Apple store does not have them, then you can go to Best Buy as Frank Yuen & Mercury52 mentioned or you can also get them at Walmart.

If you are looking for a SQUARE Card Reader they can be purchased at the following stores for $ 10.00.
And you will receive a $ 10.00 CREDIT from Square. Best Buy, Wal-mart, Meijer's, Target, Staples, Office Depot, ABC Warehouse, Radio Shack, CVS Drug Stores, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and many other stores. This is just a list to get you started. I live in Michigan and Sqaure is available at all of the retail stores for $ 10.00. Rodney

I only run about 10-15 charges per year and I found the only way to go is with Square. They deposit the money quickly and easily. No hassle. Like everyone else has said, Square Up!

Wepay is 2.99% plus .30 cents. Square is 2.75% no extra fees of any kind
Can you accept credit cards on your iphone with wepay like you can with Square? I can't imagine anything cheaper or simpler than Square, but please let me know if you can.

This topic has been great, but I'm still confused why Sam insists that he cannot use paypal. It would be like saying "my corporate gigs refuse to hire someone who drives to work in a chevy volt."
Don't tell 'em its a volt. I think its been brought up three times, and each time Sam has found a way to misinterpret posts re: paypal. Anyway, Sam, what does it matter if you swipe cards and punch in numbers with a paypal app? |

The app store shows a few screenshots, not all of them have "paypal" on the top. I cannot download paypal here with my iphone 3. I will wait until I receive the ipod touch I ordered. It cost $125 but with a square reader I should be able to run credit cards. It is partly an investment and partly fun. I want to know what its like to be able to receive credit cards.

Violinking- I am not aware that you can take CC and enter it yourself via paypal. I was under the impression that the client had to send the payment thru paypal. just like I pay for other things and others have paid me.
however regardless of that this company policy is that they can not pay thru paypal under any cercumstances. therefore my search for a better solution. so if anyone is wondering what I have come up with here is what I am doing. currently still don't have square although plan to by the end of next week. as for my client I simply told them that this year I will just waive the deposit and pay in full the date of the shows. they were very ok with that and thought that was a nice option. so far it has worked well I have 15 contracts back and signed and will get the full payment this summer when I perform there. thanks for all the info. oh and the square reader is also for when I do BOR sales it will be nice to offer CC. sam

This is a four position cord I purchased in case I want to design something to make the POS (point of sale) attractive:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008DWGLG4/ref=......ST1_dp_1 It will allow the reader to be located up to a meter from the smartphone. It is helpful to people that have phone cases. |

I have gathered all the info and have learned a few things that I don't think many here know at least was not mentioned
with square you now have the option to either pay as you go--2.75 per swipe or you can pay a monthly fee of 275 and NO per swipe fee. that way if you are high volume it might be an advantage to pay the monthly fee. although I don't know what other companies charge for their monthly fees and per swipes but thought I would mention it here. sam
