Hey all,
This might be fun, maybe not.. I was just looking at my old penguin account and noticed I had exactly 150 items in my penguin magic page. I looked at most of them to determine how much of it I actually use....I almost cried, lol. don't get me wrong, I love penguin....but I guess its all part of the process. So the question, how many items in your penguin magic account page and what percentage do you use. Im at 10% ish including effects I use from DVDs/books ive bought. BIlly |

Billy, good topic and good point. Honestly I think we all will realize that it's the same with books and video as well. How much do we actually use? I too like to visit my files in Penguin, Lybrary.com and others and I'm probably close to your percentage. At times I do revisit an effect or trick and play it up again.

I'd say 10% is accurate.

99 procent of magic is crap... (there was a quote somewhere that 99 procent of everything is crap).

Ha! Great post!
I use only one thing now out of all the stuff I ever bought from them. That was a very cheap download called, "Renegade". A very simple 'triumph' type of effect that has stood the test of time (10 years or so) and still gets me the reactions that keep it firmly in the repertoire. |

Another important question is how much did you LEARN from those other purchases? Not just techniques, but lessons and general improvement in your magic.

Even really bad purchases I will learn something, (maybe to be more carefull with my spending) often I will get a handeling or a concept even if the method was crap IMO. BIlly |

Yes, I agree. I think people feel guilty when they buy magic that they don't "use". But I buy stuff all the time that I'll never use. And I don't feel at all guilty about it. I buy stuff for many reasons: to satisfy curiosity, to give me a diversion for a bit of time, to learn, to research, to perform. Because I create magic, I buy a lot of stuff for research purposes. I want to know what's out there. A lot of times an effect will give me a spark of inspiration. Usually for something completely different.

For instance, I got many books but seldom simply read and perform the effects as described. Mostly I will learn and create my own. If the books, Dvds, products can teach you something different or something new, it serve the purposes even though it is not performed. Alex Hui Hong Kong

I’d say it’s closer to one percent for me. I still buy the stuff but it seldom makes it into my act(s). I wind up staying with the time tested stuff that I know works for the audience. I guess there is a little pressure to keep current with your craft. At least, that’s the excuse I have for buying stuff that winds up on the shelf forever.

Its an account you get from penguinmagic.com, it keeps track of your purchases and if you get any DVDs or instant downloads, you can view them from said page.
