More Ecliptic orders went out today, working overtime getting these packaged and shipped. Magi-fest is the next 3 days here in ohio, so I will not be able to get any more orders out until monday since I will not be at my house at all for 3 days.
But I promise that on monday I will devote all my time and money to getting these out. Thank you for understanding. JM |

The props arrived from Justin a few days ago, so I've just had a couple of days getting used to it. It is a marvel, and here's a review.
Before that, a few observations on the many approaches to the Haunted Deck. I have to say that I have explored many, many different approaches to the Haunted Deck, from the original Al Baker routine, and through a whole variety of approaches using different threads, reels, non-thread gimmicks, electronics. A few of them - probably half a dozen or so - are excellent, and as ever in the relentless search for perfection, each has its benefits and downsides. My favourite effect with the Haunted Deck has always been Finn Jon's 'Esoteric', because it looks so hands-off and is totally under your control. Dear old Ken Brooke put it out, and I believe Joe Stevens still has it. But it is just no longer really suitable under today's conditions, but where the conditions for a set-piece permit, it is unbeatable in its impact on an audience. Nick Einhorn replaced the Esoteric mechanism, made it more practical and came up with his superb handling in 'Spooked' - still a great solution. Vernet came out with a similar approach with their 'Phantom Deck', which is well worth trying, although I think the Einhorn package is better. My favourite approach up to now has been Chill, because of the impact on the spectator and how clean you are at the end. But it takes a deal of handling, and is in my view a one-on-one effect. My point in this overview of the Haunted Deck is that I am very committed to it as something in my repertoire - I have around 20 versions. What have I learned from 30 years of doing it? That control and effect are everything - which is why I prefer approaches with normal thread since with elastic as the motive for the movement you have to keep it under pressure once it is loaded ready to go to stop it emerging too quickly. And that it is the effect that dictates your choice of method - for example, the electronic version by Taylor Imagineering gives you full control, but I'm not keen on the way the deck moves, which for me is the point of this effect (and why I love Esoteric so much because it has the most visual, pleasing movement of the deck as it cuts to the 3 cards.) Anyway, fans of Justin Miller (of which I am one: his work on elastic loops is comprehensive and represents real break-through thinking) will know that his approach depends on the elastic loops pioneered by Finn Jon and brought alive by Yigal Mesika. This got me to reappraise the use of elastication, in Justin's work such as The Cloak. Effects like Haunted 2.0 use a material to act as a brake on the tendency of the cards to move too soon, but it is not sure enough for me. But as I say: every approach has its up- and down-sides, and one has to live with their compromises to be able to go out there with the greatest peace of mind. I have to of course live with Ecliptic in the real world before pronouncing on it, but at this early stage I must put it up there with the best. It is, forgive the cliche, a real worker. For your money you get a plentiful supply of the gimmicks (there are actually two involved, working together), a normal deck, and a .wmv film of Justin's explanation. No DVD or instructions. One benefit of this approach is immediately obvious: you get the film as soon as you order, so you can study the handling while waiting for the props to arrive in the post. I'm in the UK, and even so the props arrived within a week of the order. Any problems Justin had in the past with replying to enquiries and shipping orders have been addressed: his communication is excellent, he replies to queries quickly and patiently. The other benefit of the film approach is that as he gets bonus ideas and handlings, he can post them online to you - and he has already come up with left-field approaches to the methodology. The main gimmick is not the expected elastic thread loop; this represents real value for money, not just another excuse to charge for a supply of elastic thread. I don't know how JM sourced the gimmick material, but it isn't the sort of thing you could go and get in any shop I'm aware of. It is easily assembled - in seconds - and you're ready to go. The deck is not faked, the gimmick is built into one card so you can still use the full deck for other routines. The material is good for 7 or 8 performances, then needs replacing - hence the plentiful supply you receive, which will cover you for hundreds of performances. The explanation on film is painstaking in the extreme, but not at all laboured or tedious. A couple of evenings getting used to the handling will be sufficient to allow you to try the effect out for real people. It is not difficult to learn or cosy to perform; as with any prop you have to get used to the flow of the handling to make it natural. The handling is very clean, and the whole routine extremely well thought-through and explained. Justin obviously has a great deal of passion and enthusiasm for this routine. I'm hoping that it turns out to be The One! - it is certainly shaping up that way. I thoroughly recommend it to you. And if you're coming to the Haunted Deck anew, and want a view from someone who has spent hundreds of dollars on pursuing the best version on which to plump for, I'd say get three to cover different performing situations: 'Spooked' (for display to a crowd), 'Chill' (for one-on-one use) and 'Ecliptic' (for general close-up use). Then play with them, and you'll discover which suits your style and the conditions under which you perform. A big tip of the hat to Justin Miller for a fine addition to this canon. |

Fantastic and detailed review bobgill,
Just one quick question, are you constrained by lighting conditions? Thanks Chris |

Thank you for a great review, I am excited to receive mine when Justin gets back in. I am intrigued by Justin's method as I have had a few HD's and look forward to seeing his gimmick version & how this performs in the real world / close up vs the other methods/gimmicked HD's.

Thanks for the review, bobgill. I'm still on the fence about the whole HD concept -- your review did push me towards the inner courtyard, though.
Let's see how long I manage to keep my balance. |

Hi Chris (bond19) - No - one of the joys of this version is that there is no IT to give you lighting problems.
Hi Gorecki: I can tell you that for virtually all close-quarter performing conditions - mix 'n mingle, one-on-one, tables, trade show, street - I've found very few effects that have the impact on the spectators than Haunted Deck. It even transcends language barriers, because it just does not need much in the way of patter and is totally visual. So from the point of view of the effect, it is hard to match. The issue for magicians in this case is getting happy with methodology, and whether the impact of the effect merits any compromises on working. There are so many good versions available now there's no excuse to avoid trying it - the problem now is choosing which method to opt for. And if, like me, you are prepared to try all of them, you're in for a considerable investment. My choice would be directed first and foremost by the effect: does it look clean (particularly in the insertion of the card into the deck, which in some versions if very unnatural), and above all: how magical does the actual movement of the deck and the emerging card look? That's why I wave such a flag for 'Esoteric', because it is to me the very best-looking - by which I mean most magical - movement of the deck and the 3 chosen cards of any version I've seen, and I've owned dozens. And even if you don't have the nerve to perform it (lighting issues abound!) there are a couple of ideas Ken Brooke came up with to aid the movement that are applicable to today's versions. (Hint: blu-tac!) One tiny flaw in my review: I referred to 'Haunted 2.0' as being hard to control. That was in fact 'Haunted' version 1 - the version 2.0 that has just come out is said to be a considerable improvement, but I haven't seen it. Yet! There is a separate post on the Café on Haunted 2.0, as there is on virtually every commercially available version of the last decade. Best Bob |

Just watched the download intructions for this as I wait for the product to arrive in the mail. I am really liking what I have seen on the vids. As usual JM lays out great instructions on the downloads, very comprehensive. His explanations are always top notch. He included a handling for an effect that he and Zombie Magic devised and MAN is it sweet! I really think this is going to be a winner in my set! For $30.00- definately a great deal!! Will post back after I have "ECLIPTICIZED" some minds......................

So all orders should be out no later by next friday. Also, since the post office has raised prices YET AGAIN, I have dropped all snail mail effects down $5 to keep the prices as reasonable as possible. JM |
