Hi All,
I'm always amazed by the creativity shown here and am hoping for some inspiration... I need to make an appearing cake stand/cake tier like this: http://www.constanceinteriors.co.uk/supe......tand.jpg The effect I'm going for is that the tiers expand up from the first dish, so what appears to just be one dish comically grows into a large tier. The prop will probably be quite large and have 4 tiers. It can be held in the hands. My first idea was to use a telescopic aerial inside the base, with plates or dishes with holes in, strung together and to lift the thing up by hand. Perhaps spring flowers between the dished can create volume and appear to be the "canapes" that I need to produce? I think that sponge would take up too much space? solid items can be on the outside edge of each tier. I then got thinking about ways in which the thing can rise up on it's own - electric aerials or appearing wand or cane mechanisms, lazy tongs etc etc. I'm a bit stuck and was wondering whether anyone had any ideas? Ideally I want it to be comical - too much for anyone to be able to eat. It need to be dependable for many shows and look the part. A bit of a challenge... Thanks, Ben |

Is it possible to drop 1 or 2 layers into the table?
I spent most of my money on magic and women, the rest i just wasted

I'm not sure. I think probably not, but I'm open to possibilities...
The effect is for a play, so I'm hoping to keep the props as separate from the set build as possible, so it can be in the rehearsal room for practice. if a table made it more impressive, then it's worth considering Ben |

What are the performing criteria? Surrounded or stage with Backdrop? Could it be done by a steal ?

If you have a metal appearing cane, the tapered nature of it would allow it to go through holes in the plates of graduated diameters, lifting up the proper plate as it expands. Anyway you could test the concept with a cane and some paper plates quickly enough. Spellbinder's "Flowers That Bloom With a Spring" from The Wizards' Journal # 21 includes a variety of spring fruits and vegetable ideas that might be relevant to your project. A white spring flower with a bright red center might look like a delicious canapé from a distance, also white and pink spring layers on a green lettuce leaf could be a nice hors d’œuvre looking thingee.

I was thinking the same thing (can even test with paper plates and a plastice appearing candle).
