It seems I've suffered the same fate that befell Mr Cassidy.

People have received an e mail, apparently from me, that contains only a link. And a deasd link at that,
I didn't send it!!!!

As the emails all seemed to arrive around 3am this morning, so I'm guessing it was someone in a different time zone that has got at my email.

Apparently it's called spoofing, whatever that means.
Sorry if it's caused anyone any bother.

Java is not the issue in these cases. The lack of HTTPS/SSL on certain email services is.
Plus I would not take security advice from Kim.

Also, the Java problem has been fixed if you've updated to the latest version.

I'm a complete idiot when things get this technical.

I've changed all my passwords.
I access my emails either via PC, iPhone or iPad.

Is there something else I need to be doing to prevent this happening again?
How much damage has it done?
Is it just an annoyance for those in my contact list or something more serious?

I know nothing.

As this subject is not mentalism I think I'll write a blog post next week, if I have time, that explains the problem and solution.
My blog is HTTP://simonedwards.blogspot.com

Actually, I found some time to write it up so here's a direct link.

It explains how the bad guys compromise the email accounts, what you *don't* need to worry about and how to fix the problem.

For the techies I also explain how to track the attacker...

Thanks very much for taking the time to sit down and write the article about compromised email accounts - it is very helpful & reassuring.

To have something like this so clearly explained is much appreciated!

Regards,

Bill

You are welcome. I decided to add another article that shows how to add extra security to an email account, which vastly reduces the chances that someone can gain access.

Howto: Bullet-proof your email account

A security firm found out what's going on. The short answer: log out of Yahoo Mail at the end of every session.

Simon,

Thanks for all the info. I was aware of some of the issues and fixes, but not all of them-- much appreciated!
