I generally hate breaks and think card magic could be a lot more clean, more magically without breaks.
Maybe it's impossible to avoid breaks alltogether, but I could see some cases where a key card of some sort could do a better job. Does anyone uses a keycard instead of breaks? |

While I don't necessarily agree with you about breaks, I can see what you're saying. Also a lot of people hold breaks very poorly, which doesn't help things.
I've used key cards, though not as replacements for breaks. I know that I HAVE used injogs and breathers as replacements in some cases. |

I've seen more professionel magicians hold breaks very poorly than I've seen invisble breaks. And angles are also not very good from the side you're holding the break

It can be made completely invisible from anyone who is looking at the side you're holding the break. Again, this just comes down to people thinking that all there is to a break is just holding a spot in the deck -- there's more to it than that.

Tyler Wilson did a fantastic "breakdown" of the pros, cons, uses and substitutes for breaks on his site cherryvillain. If you're not already a member, I highly recommend it. All three "opensourcing the real work" videos (break, double, and pass) are fantastic. Definitely worth a look if you're considering whether breaks are worthwhile in your magic. There are times when they are perfect to use, as well as times that they are not. There are some magicians that rarely use breaks however and use jog work. It is all a matter of preference really. |

Yes, excellent Cherryvilain video on the break!
I too try to favor small jogs or a breather keycard when I can. But I try to improve my break too, because sometimes my hands act on themselves and use a break before I even notice it. Cheers, Sébastien. |

I have seen Tyler's video on breaks and it's excellent. He makes a lot of good points.

I own 1 "short card" and have maybe used it twice while goofing around by myself. I have never really had a problem with breaks. I would imagine it boils down to what you feel comfortable with.

The audience shouldn't be aware of the break so I don't get the clean and magical comment. Grip the deck correctly and angle it right and no one should see the break. Actually a lot of tricks would be less clean with a key card because you'd have to look at the face.

And I should probably have stated a crimped card (or something similiar) instead of a key card.
Something where you feel instead of seeing the face of the card "key" card |

You should check out Steven Youell's DVD that he is putting out soon. It's called "Keys to the Kingdom".
There is a thread about the DVD in this forum. |

Gary Oullett's "Pro Control" is a good example. A "thick" card would be another. Another strategy that would be helpful is to have a key card that is marked on the back. This too, would negate having to look at the face of the card. Cheers, J.Warrens |

Just having a "stranger card" from another deck will make a natural tendency to come to top or bottom. Any kind of breather would work a little better.
Let a spectator handle your cards and you'll get all kinds of special cards. Sometimes I think they are intentionally bending the card so they can follow it. I feel like telling them they are making it too easy. I like a break because it bothers me if any of the cards don't feel "right". -Mary Mowder |

The artificial break...it works, but it requires a different touch than working with a break, and the cleanliness you get in the still moments is generally lost when doing things that normally use a break. Cutting to a break is far more sure than cutting to a breather subtle enough to be invisible...

Dai Vernon "...maintaining a break..."
Larry Jennings "...hold a break..." Ed Marlo "...get a break..." I guess these guys just didn't do clean card magic. I learn something new every day. |

Some will be shown to be false and others will be show to be even more useful and versatile than most here know. I'd add that anyone who gives up a key card in favor of breaks or vice-versa hasn't really thought it through and is limiting themselves for no good reason. They both have their advantages and disadvantages and when you use them together, they can form a devastating combination. |
