Who do you think are the best living male and female actors based on their body of work? Yes, I know best is a loaded word, etc, etc. Define it as you like.

I can't narrow it down really, but just for fun if I had to pick one male and one female, my choices would be:

Male: Anthony Hopkins.
Female: Meryl Streep.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I'm with Streep. But what about Max von Sydow? So many great movies in so many languages.

I don't think von Sydow showed much range. He usually played a stern, authoritative or powerful person. Compare him with Olivier whose career spanned German officers, Nazi-hunters, kings, servants and a music-hall hack performer.

von Sydow does have wonderful force and presence.

I think you're right. I'm mostly impressed that von Sydow could work so well in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, French, Italian, Spanish and German.

Olivier was another matter altogether. But he's pretty dead right now.

I like your picks. I'd probably give Kenneth Branagh and Helen Mirren the silvers.

Gary Oldman is amazing at transforming.. He never looks the same from picture to picture..
I would certainly put him up there in regards to great living actors.

Just to wander off a bit, no one would likely award these three actors top laurels of all-time, but in this one movie, many said they each had the performances of their lives (and 2 were in relatively small supporting roles!).

Maximillian Schell
Judy Garland
Montgomery Clift

Can anyone guess the movie without finding a reference? Smile

On topic, Olivier gets my top honor for men. Spencer Tracy is up there, too.

I need to think more about the women.

Here's a good story about Tracy. He was a poor, young, married, struggling actor. He wasn't making much money, etc... and was considering throwing in the towel. At the time, he was being directed in a play by George M. Cohan. In that day's rehearsal, Tracy had to deliver a monolog. After it was over, Cohan quietly said, "Mr. Tracy, your are the greatest actor I have ever seen." Tracy said it gave him a boost to keep going.
