I was given the colour changing wreaths as a christmas present this year, and no matter how hard I try, I cant think of a good routine.
I practised the mechanics of the trick, then performed it in front of my family... And to them it was obvious how the trick worked. I cant blame them, it seems to me like a obvious trick I was thinkign of doing a sucker type effect with 3 volounteers, changing the white to the colours and back again, then have the children yelling out that the coloured ones are still in the bag. I disagree, then eventually admit that there is a coloured wreath inside the bag, and then magically change it into the big ring. Does anyone else use the coloir changing wreths? Any ideas on a routine? Thanks, Jake (the 12 year old) |

If you feel uncomfortable performing it using patter, you might want to use music.
Following are some videos that might help you find the click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thGuZMxqqN4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIiXISjR2aM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qshN7Hd_48 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M-5p7efySM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eps-LJF0FEs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRiRIRtoe-w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3FYa3W6WsE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txwebhxLGDQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu6M3sOYev8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_j7hF29524 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi-rIfkp7B0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH5AkMasg5g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RuWGV5LArg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh_8lYem8kI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OOJkm4tP_A |

I think that's a great idea Jake. You could also consider presenting the same idea but as a Teach-a-trick type presentation. Demonstrate how to do it but eventually turn the tables by transforming the three rings into a giant one.

I have thought up three ideas Jake.
#1. I know you are into balloons too. Instead of placing a silk thru the hole, pass a color matching balloon (160 0r 260) thru the hole, but do not leave it there. Of course you will have to make the hole bigger. #2. Put in the red silk. Pull out the blue ring without looking at it saying it is red. The kids well yell "No it is blue." Look surprised as you look and see the wrong expected color. Continue getting the other rings wrong too. It will enhance a lot of audience reactions. #3. [All music] Start juggling the three white rings. Connect one at a time so all three of the white will be together (Linking Ring method). Put all three white rings in the bag together. Put all three silks thru the same time. Pull out the three colored rings the same time. Toss them in the air making all three become one. |

You could perform the first part of the routine as written, then ditch the bag, and use another method to switch in the giant ring at the end.
For instance, make out like the routine is over, reach behind your table to get a prize for the kid helper, and at the same time, switch in the giant ring. Make sure you include some further business, so there's a time-lapse. And then "visibly" transform the 3 coloured rings into one. Christopher T Magician has a nice suggestion for this effect in his Christmas video. |

Family are never a good guide for a young magician - and without pauses this trick could be done in ten seconds, but is not entertaining.
I do this as a silent piece (second of four routines set to music)OR with funny patter - I started five years ago with David Ginn's patter http://www.ginnmagic.com/Davidonyoutube1......XISjR2aM and slowly evolved my own. The business/ patter in-between the productions is vital. The idea of using other items / balloons to change the colour is a good one. Get the audience distracted. Before using this as a sucker routine, check what other bag routines you will be doing in a show. I work hard not to have too many.

I love those single function kiddie magic props. I have a spare room full of them.

I thought, when I started reading this thread, that is was a David Ginn routine. Does anyone know which, if any, book of his he portrays it in?
The presentation makes the magic.

Does it really fool people? I don't think so but it still gets a great reaction. It's the type of magic that I consider "eye candy" - colorful magic that people like to see. I do it the way the late Chris Carey described it in one of the "Do the Stuff That's You" books. (Chris used the Kikuchi Feather Rings which are a lot nicer than Color Changing Wreaths.) He recommended showing the three white wreaths and only changing the color of one of wreaths. After changing the color of that wreath, go directly into the finish by taking two white ones and the one colored one and putting it into the bag and changing the color of the other two wreaths which become one large one.

Quote: Very nice routine! I really liked the silk/wreath subtlety, where he pulls the white wreath partially out of the box, then pulls it back in with the silk. Really nice subtlety. On 2013-01-31 14:02, Neznarf wrote: |

I use this a lot
I do it to music but talk over the top. I juggle them to start then get a girl to call out ANY colour when they say pink 99% I say we will use red that close enough. and carry on like that the last silk I wave in front of the kids face and say pick any colour!!!! and the kicker at the end does surprise the adults and if you have a real high ceiling its nice and even if the older kids think they know how its done, it throws them at the end! |

I too have never cared for this trick. It fails my creativity matrix on several levels. What are the feather rings supposed to be? Why are they changing colour? Why does your character own such a thing? Why should your audience care? How can I make this funny or even slightly entertaining? What does it all mean?
Too many questions, too few answers and zero motivation to perform such a feat. At least for me. Plus my wife really hates the trick and would make me sleep on the couch for a week if I bought such a lame trick.

Too much thinking - not all magic for kids has to have a logical sequencing and inner script. When you think about it, why do metal rings have to link and unlink, why do crochet balls travel from closed cup to closed cup...what is the point of all of this? Kids don't care, in my years of performing experience, no kid (or parent) has come up to me and pointed out the fact that a trick wasnt logical or meaningful. If you like, build a story around the props or not...doesnt matter to kids. The feather rings could be angel's halos or whatever...they're colorful, good climax, can involve up to 3 kids, occupy 5-7 mins of show time...I love it and use it all the time for kids 7 and under! At US$25, how can you go wrong!
