Bridge, chess, reading, writing, movies, music (guitar & piano hack). I'm also an active member of Toastmasters International, and this year, I've decided to try to develop my absolute worst ability - visual arts. I'm working though Mark Kistler's "You Can Draw in 30 Days" and finding it to be outstanding.

I forgot about the games I like. I've played chess most of my life but really am just an average player. (I'm too impatient to play the game properly.) But I love tournament backgammon as well as "backgammon for blood" (i.e. for money). Have also been an avid Texas Hold-em player since long before the game became widely known. I prefer no-limit tournament play and compete frequently. (I don't care for low limit ring games as very little strategy comes into play.)
Oh- and I like bridge, too, but I suck at it. And once in a while I still enjoy making model ships and airplanes. (I think it has to do with the glue!) |

When I was a kid, I built up most of the Aurora monster models. In the late-90's they started re-issuing them, and I've got a whole bunch of them up, now. A number of glow in the dark ones, too! It was fun to be a part of a model forum for aficionados (sp?) of these kits, as I learned a whole LOT of great painting techniques that really upped the quality of my work. I also got one or two resin models - the Ymir from "20 Million Miles to Earth" is my favorite of these.
Chess - but like Bob, too impatient to give it the care it deserves. But I enjoy reading and learning about the greats and their games/matches. I've always loved Renaissance Faires, etc... I was once invited to a meeting for a local group of the Society for Creative Anachronism, but ended up not going and look back and wonder what I missed. I played soccer as a kid, started again in 1994, quit for a couple of seasons, and am about to start another season. Very enjoyable.

In the warm weather months my wife, and I ride in MINI Cooper rallies. We put the top down, turn the sounds up, take a four hour ride on some windy back country roads, and we top it off with a fine lunch. I have even booked a few jobs with other MINI Cooper owners on these rallies. Business, pleasure, fine dining, and the company of a beautiful woman, life is good.

I saw a guy on eBay selling some antique painted Ball and Vase tricks. So I am now using my monster model experience to try out the same. One in copper, and one in brass:

Funny story about the glow in the dark models. When I was in NYC, I was going to be the next big thing on Broadway. Never made it, but I did do a few off-Broadway plays. The first being an original series of one-act plays based on the old monster movies called "A Night Of Terror." This would be 1975. While in rehearsals, I found the old models that I'd had as a kid on sale at Woolworth's. They had each of the character from each of the one act plays; Frankenstein's Monster, Quasimodo, Erik - The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula. Each had glow in the dark face and hands. I bought them, but them together and took them to opening night. First bizarre thing that happened, I forgot that on NYC subway trains, there comes points where the train loses power. Inertia keeps it going until it reaches the next point, but the lights go out in the cars. So the lights go out, come back on and everyone is staring at me! I realized that I was sitting on the train with an open box that, in the dark, suddenly started glowing! Today I would have gotten lynched! So I get to the theater and set up the models, everyone is pleased and stoked to see them. Second thing, we have a moment in the play where all the lights go out. During intermission, the director comes up to me and says; "You could have told me the things glowed in the dark! Scared the $#&& out of me!" Oh well.

My work and my leisure is so closely linked, it's sometimes hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. I build some magic for fun, and I collect magic. Oh, I also collect Halloween decor, mostly die cuts, but I focus on vintage. But in some past life, I've had many hobbies. Mostly, I made models... airplanes and monsters when I was a kid, and railroads when I was adult and able to afford the stuff.
Creature From The Black Lagoon was definitely a Universal Monster. Most of those models were. However, one of the models I had was a witch. I'm not sure where that connection was, as she was not a typical Universal Monster.

Michael
I'm old enough to remember seeing the creature from the black lagoon, and when he first came out of the swamp the zipper on the back of his costume reflected in the sun, and blew his whole scary image.
