I just wanted to post this video of Jamy Ian Swiss performing his one coin routine for a PBS special. I've just recently discovered Jamy and I have to say that, in my opinion, this is one of the best routines I've seen simply because it's a perfect combination of patter, timing and performance. He brings you in to the trick with his patter so smoothly, tells you a story and it's all timed perfectly to his moves. It's so relaxed and smooth and effortless. Just brilliant. Do you think good patter is important to your coin work?

Nice,
I love the way it flows. Timing + Patter = nice performance He has taken the basics(and advanced stuff) and put them together well. Thanks for sharing Harris still with palms of aluminum foil for a lighter touch in coin magic

That was one of the better one coin "performances" I've seen.

Yep, he's one of the very best closeup men around, cards and coins. But there are a lot of them, Chad Long is another one if you want to watch expert presentation and timing, cards and coins, and David Stone ain't no slouch either. Watch his one coin routine, complete with patter albeit in French but the magic is clear enough, and takes a one coin routine a bit further.

Wow Mb thanks for that link. That video was astounding! Being a Canuck I can understand a good bit of French (I think up here you learn it through osmosis in-utero, lol) so I caught some of what he was talking about, but wow does he ever have great hands. His hand washing alone was mind boggling! And yes, you're right about the timing. I'm beginning to see how massively important it is to have good patter and good timing. More than just the same 'ol 'watch as I put the coin here then it's vanishes' talk. After reading Curtis Kam's pocketbook my eyes have been opened a bit more about how to approach a routine when it comes to patter. Rather than vocalizing each move you make (I put the coin here, bring it over and here and it vanishes!) One should make a story around the routine and each move visualizes a point in the story. It just makes it so much more enjoyable to watch. Great stuff! Any suggestions you guys have for good David Stone videos would be welcome

Mb, good point. I've just gotten back into magic and decided to pursue coins more this time around. I have a David Stone vid and love his one coin. I'm working on it now. He is also pretty funny, but I tend to like that kind of of the wall sort of humor.

Glad you guys can see my points here, as it's not to knock anyone but to show that the journey is a long one and to varying degrees. Sometimes we are just not aware of things that also exist or how very well things can be mastered with individual creativies attached. As much as I appreciate and respect the abilities of Ponta The Smith, he is nowhere close to these guys IMHO. His technical skill can't be questioned as he is quite excellent but all the other stuff that makes a routine so memorable, well, I just haven't seen all that from him and certainly nothing like Jamy Ian Swiss or Davide Stone or a Chad Long.
And speak of Chad Long, might as well include a little snippet from him doing closeup with coins and cards while also being quite entertaining. His technical skill is uncanny and there aren't too many guys out there that can handle a deck of cards or coins any better than this guy, and do all the things he can do all in the same moments so effortlessly. On top of that he starts off with a great coin routine here, one that we all wish we could pull off that good, truth be told. It's not a one coin routine but you can see that one coin would be no problem for him, piece a cake. But for me, watch when he does the cards and makes a cough at about the :60 mark, the precision of the following action there within the heat of the moment is just perfect. If you can do all that, what the heck is it to do a good one coin routine??? These guys are all complete packages, not mere tributaries off into one little hook. They are Jacks of all trades that just happen to be all Aces as to "Timing, Patter and Performance" coins, cards and closeup. Levels! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rJSmcgJ_wA

Continuing on this topic I just watched a video of David Roth at the NYCS doing his tuning fork routine with the glass and coins. I'm not sure if you guys have seen this routine yet but it's another brilliant example of what we've been talking about. There's a very definite beginning, middle and end, starting with the tuning fork and glass, slowly working up to the coins, climaxing with the 6 coin production, then the complete coin vanish then ending once again with just the tuning fork and glass. His patter is timed perfectly to the routine and compliments it perfectly. I simply love this routine. I'd love to work this one into my own performance someday.

You have happened upon a true Master in coin magic, in David Roth. His Tuning Fork routine is a classic and any coin worker worth his salt knows of it and of Roth's great contributions to this genre of magic. The Tuning Fork is all you say of it and more the more you watch it. Roth has many classic effects like that and they all have helped tremendously to craft coin magic in the past 20, 30 years or so. Most here and around the world have grew up on Roth, his books, DVDs, writings and teachings. The big, small and all have engaged his work and it has helped us all to be better workers in this stuff.
Like I said, it's quite a journey and Roth is one of the great lights along the way as to coin magic for sure. But there are others. Oh, and welcome to the Café, it's quite a place, as you are beginning to see.

Sorry I should have phrased that differently. David Roth was actually the initial reason I began to enjoy coin magic more than most other types of magic. I saw a video of him doing a coins through table routine about 10 years ago and was hooked ever since. I haven't seen the tuning fork routine however (hope I don't sound too green) and have no idea how I've missed it all this time but it now certainly ranks as one of my favorite

Yeah, Roth got a lot of us interested and better focused in coin magic. He's got tons of stuff that shows the way on a variety of coin levels as to parlor, walk around, table work, etc. I used to see him all the time at Tannen's Magic Shop when I was growing up and then around here and there in the City over the years. He's a great showman and teacher and is absolutely a highly respected Master. His Tuning Fork, Portable Hole, etc. routines are parlor classics, and always fun to see him do it. His [ Coins Across is still one of my favorites, still masterfully done after all these years. He certainly does have a great handle on all the elements that make magic wonderful. His sense of Timing, Patter and Performance seem absolutely instinctive and so natural. Roth is quite intellectual as to coin magic, but unlike guys that discuss wars but never been in one, he has actually worked the many fields from whence he speaks. I think everyone at one time or another, has stopped to listen and learn from him, still to this day.
