I love Hayashi's magic, he's really good and just a pleasure to watch perform. Only, just don't tell Al Schneider how his original Matrix continues to get better and better without him. With all due respect, what you see here is the difference between a Mustang and a Maserati.

I really like the fourth vanish of the second phase --
proving once again that the easiest coin to vanish is one that never was.

Way too many phases IMO. Just more for folks to deconstruct.

Looks pretty good. In the 2nd part he does a vanish that looks like a spidey grip thing but he keeps his hands closed, which seemed kinda weird.
As sort of a side note, I have personally never liked dialogue that goes like---"I'm going to fast for you, maybe I should slow down." |

This is typical Hayashi lecture stuff: impressing fellow magicians with his skill and umpteen phases of move-heavy matrix variants and until everbody falls asleep. In my opinion, this is bad magic (I'm also quite sure, that Hayashi doesn't perform this matrix massacre for laymen). Al Schneider's routine on the other hand looks like real magic, because from the spectator's point of view, there are no moves at all.

Great skill being shown by Hayashi, however I tend to agree with everyone that the routine is a bit too long !! For the lay audience it's definitely overkill IMO. So my question to the learned scholars out there is: how many phases should one use for a coin matrix before it gets boring ? I would say in my humble opinion that perhaps 3 is a perfect number.

I truly don't think Hayashi does all these phases, it seems it was some sort of lecture thing and he was just showing one impossibility after another, much like you see in that ongoing video of Daryl doing the Ambitious Card Routine, same difference. And like Daryl's work with cards, Hayashi shows several possibilities for you to pick and choose from to make the routine longer or shorter, whatever you want...C'mon man!
If you only like 3 phases, you can find 3 great ones there beyond the simple Matrix, or increase it somewhat with an even more astounding finale. This all sounds a bit like when they came up with automatic transmissions for cars and the folks at the time, who had grown up with stick shifts would say, "What in the heck do we need that for?" Or fast forward to today, when people say as to the little camera in the car now that shows you backing up, "What in the heck do we need that for, when all you have to do is simply turn your head and look?" I'm just sayin' and to each his own. Have a great day all.

I disagree with regard to Al Schneider's Classic Matrix. I know that you and Al have had some disagreements on the Café recently but why bring your feelings about his Classic Matrix into this thread. Here I thought that this thread is about Havashi's video and his routine! Quote:

Al Schneider's original routine is simple, elegant, and very magical to a layman, the routine I prefer. But Hayashi's work will fool magicians as well, which is what I think this routine is all about. Some good stuff there. Check out his much simpler routine, but with a kicker ending, on the DVD, "A Weekend at the 4F with 'Obie' O'Brien." Every move, placement of hands and props, is carefully thought out. He has a pleasant personality too.
