The gimmick key is very well constructed, looks like it will take a beating, but I wouldn't put it on a normal key ring simply wear and tear might cause damage. I will be picking up one of those clip key chains he uses in demo to get into and out of the trick easily without causing any damage to the key. There is a bit of a knack to link/unlink and practice to make it look good and smooth Also beware there is a switch involved if you want it to be examined I will keep this on my keyring and use it. |

I just received Linkey. It is wonderful! I really like it. It can be carried on your keychain every day, unlike every other key related effect I have (I probably have half a dozen or more). I think it does make sense to have it on a quick release type keychain to make it easier to remove during performance. It comes with everything needed, including instruction on various ways to perform with it, and how to hand it out for inspection.
I really like some of my other key effects, but this one goes to the top of the list because it is a great effect AND I can just leave it on my ordinary keychain so I am ready at any time. KJ |

I do leave these on my keys at all times and have done so for years. The keys take the wear and tear with ease

It is a very good effect. You get two keys, one gimmicked anone ungimmicked as well as some rubber bands. The gimmicked key is very unique with no moving parts. Alan is very thorough on the DVD explaining everything. You can also link it with a thin necklace as explained although I will do it just with the rubberband. The linking is very easy. I have to practice the unlinking a bit more as it is a tad more difficult to get the knack of but nothing overly difficult. The key can be inspected before the link as Alan discusses and shows how.The gimmicked key is quite strong an can be carried on your regular key chain all day long without any problem. This is a terrific item to carry along with you at all times.

I bought this at Blackpool and really love the idea. I remember someone posting a YouTube clip on the Café a good while ago of Alan performing this and I was very glad he decided to release the effect!
I did have an issue with the gimmick I was supplied with that meant I could not perform the trick as it was in the DVD or as shown on the WPR you might have seen recently (can't explain the problem without exposing the gimmick). I was very grateful that Takel was able to show me his handling so that I can now perform the effect slightly differently. I'll see how we'll it works for me and perhaps purchase again if it's strong. |

My thought without having the trick.. Looks great. The price is right. The "problem" I have sometimes had with "organic" effects that use a gimmicked everyday object is that if it were ungimmicked why wouldn't you use a spectators key and of course you really can't. Or they might say now do it with my key. That is why I like borrowed ring on string or rubberband effects. I had this issue a little with the Greg Wilson pen trick which I really like. Just an observation and certainly not a criticism of this trick which I will probably pick up

Alan does discuss on the DVD what to say to justify you using your own key. You can say what Alan suggests or come up with your own justification.

I ordered this and I am hoping that the "issue" with the gimmick is not something that is common.

To save navigating to the WPR thread, here is my review of Linkey:
Linkey arrived this morning and I've had a couple of hours to watch the DVD and play around with the gimmick and handling. You get an ingeniously gimmicked key and a normal duplicate key. These are standard SC1 brass keys, widely used for padlocks, and are supplied blank so that you can get them cut to fit your own lock if you wish. The duplicate is to allow the key to be examined at the beginning and end of the routine. You also get a few rubber bands. These are simply to give you some bands to practice linking onto the key. They are NOT part of the gimmick mechanism. Unlike other linking keys, the precision-engineered gimmicked key has no moving parts at all and there is nothing to wear out or replace. It seems pretty robust and there shouldn't be any problems keeping it permanently attached to your set of keys - although Alan doesn't advise attaching it directly to a split-ring key ring which could risk damage to the key. A spring key ring that is itself attached to a split-ring key ring is ideal. The linking and unlinking of the rubber band is very quick, easy to do, and highly visual. It works perfectly with the No. 19 bands that I use for CMH and other impromptu band effects. I'm not sure yet whether the linking key effect is actually any stronger than the impromptu links/unlinks of rubber band to finger ring that I do, though the display of the linked band on the key does look very convincing. The most difficult part of the routine is the handling and misdirection of the switches needed at the start and end of the routine. However, these handlings are quite natural, don't need much skill, and are well explained. There are also some potential angle issues that you need to be aware of in performance - the gimmicked key cannot be shown edge-on unless you keep the key moving. In practice, I don't think this is a major issue. The DVD also includes an alternative presentation in which the key is linked to a borrowed ladies necklace. This requires a very THIN necklace (no thicker than a No. 19 rubber band) and there is some possibility that the necklace could be scratched or broken during performance. Alan recommends checking that it is a cheap necklace before attempting this. I don't think I'll bother with it. There is also a bonus effect on the DVD (which requires you to make up your own cheap gimmick) in which a borrowed key visibly links onto your split-ring key ring. This does look very good but, in practice, I can't see it really working with a borrowed key since, certainly in close-up performance, the key that you borrow needs to look almost identical to one that you supply yourself (this effect does NOT use the Linkey or duplicate that are supplied with the set). I could, however, see myself using this with my own key (i.e., not using a borrowed key). The DVD is 35 mins in length, shot to camera in what looks like Alan's front room, but is fairly good quality and has everything you need to know, without any unnecessary fluff. I'm not sure that I will actually use Linkey very often since I am happy with my linking band to finger ring routine which is totally impromptu and doesn't require any switches. But Linkey is a VERY GOOD effect and the price makes it an absolute bargain for what you get. Mike |
