Did you know that Doctor Bob already has a Church? It's the First Universal Church of Knowledge, generally referred to by its acronym.

I was performing my skeleton key routine, turned out to be a coven of witches and they wanted me to be their warlock.

Mine was in the '70's. I'd offered to show 'something I was warned not to attempt until I'd learned more, in my metaphysical training'. I pooled the $1 bills everyone had in a pile, and one by one searched for one of a certain vibration. The host wrote down the serial number and I tore a corner half off to mark it, put it in an envelope, and it was burned while I 'captured' it mentally.
I reconstructed the molecules into their original order, but lost the location of the unit in the nethersphere in recondensing it. The host's wife wandered the house while I yelled at her when she seemed closer to it. She finally pinpointed it by lifting a statue in another room...there was an envelope there...she brought it back (IN SHOCK) to the room we were all in, and they checked it out. Same bill. Bazinga! Religion of Tom. Well worth the small effort.

Q&A seance (especially with message bearing, see above) readings (basically a one-on-one Q&A, with or without effects) energy work (Jerome Finley's stuff is amazing!) EDIT: Thinking about it a bit more, I am siding with the "anything" category. Originally I was going to say that revealing a card is unlikely to start a religion, and I stand by that I think it's unlikely that that alone would do it. On the other hand, people start religions all the time with no effects whatsoever, nothing but stories, experiences, philosophies and ideas. Given that it seems like if you were starting a religion already and could present any piece as meaningful and real, then it seems as though it would work. ...but it seems hard to beat Q&A (public, private and/or message bearing) and energy work.

Starting your own religion is not exactly what it's cracked up to be.

Yes, the roots of modern mentalism lie in 19th Century Spiritualism. It is not a subcategory of magic as magicians frequently claim. Just curious as to what classifies as "modern mentalism" vs. more ancient practices grounded in Shamanism and "priestly" activities (power more than religion IMHO) Certain forms of Divination, for example, can be traced back thousands of years. Does Modern Mentalism appeal to a different audience? Should the performer differentiate Modern vs. Ancient in a presentation?

Of course the essentials of what we do goes back to the Oracle at Delphi (literally, see John Riggs's work) and before, but I believe that 19th century spiritualists developed many of the specific techniques that we use and the style of performance that we use, even so many of the 'psychological illusionist.'
I certainly don't think it's a slight against the older forms, which are still practiced, are still effective and a regularly successfully combined with the base of 'modern mentalism,' only a recognition of direct historical derivation. Those are my thoughts/understandings. Bob will probably put it better.
