"Magic & Meaning" is the one book that has impacted my thinking greatly. The examples of the medicine men, the ethics they operated under, really made me reexamine how I approach my presentations/scripts. Truly, I cherish this book.

Smoke and Mirrors is still one of my favorites but it seems criminal to just mention one-I have so many fantastic books. I probably like the Bannon book because I got it when I first got into magic and I learned every trick in there and still do many of them. So objectively, it's probably not the "best" book out there but boy, the material sure has served me well.
Other "just one" book nominees: Mind Myth, Magic Anneman 13 steps to Mentalism Stars of Magic Richard's Almanac Amateur Magician's Handbook Art of Astonishment Pure Effect (actually this book has been enormously influential on my thinking) Sorry, just couldn't name one. |

It's great to see not only that there is such a great range of books listed here as the 'one book', but that interest in the subject is so high that the thread has gone on for years! It's also gratifying to see so many mentions of Hay's Amateur Magician's Handbook, as it's one of my all-time favorites, and probably the one magic book I would take with me to a desert island.

Dai Vernon Book of Magic. What else would you need? My first, and influential book, was "Learn Magic" Henry Hay. The next was Marvels of Mystery, John Booth (put a whole act together out of that one book, and the basis won my a Grand Prix at the PCAM).

I am unable to have "just one" favorite so my personal picks are
The Shiels Effect 13 Steps to Mentalism Swami/Mantra Seance and possibly The Compleat Invocation after it arrives and I have a chance to take a couple weeks to look at it. |

Even though you've limited it to just one book, look how many books I'm now going to have to go and buy!
 Thanks for all the food for thought! |
