Hey all,
A couple different summer day camps have contacted me about doing a magic show then a workshop for the kids after the show. Each workshop would have about 20-25 kids and the directors wanted to teach the kids something that they could take home. What easy to teach/easy to do tricks would you recommend to buy? I was thinking ball and vase, 2 card monte, etc. Also, where is the cheapest place to buy these props?
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,

as I mentioned in another thread it all comes down to budget and age of the kids.

I can tell you that ball and vase is like the worse trick to teach. I have been running a magic camp for almost 17 years and at first I too thought it was a great trick to teach-- the kids hated it. and part of the problem is that the cheap one you buy to use to teach is just that a cheap one and the gimmick wot even look like the ball! ugh

here are a few general ideas that work for kids ages 7-12 give or take
grandma necklace- the favorite each year at camp
french drop coin vanish
magical block (there are a few versions of this but the block one is the best in my opinion)
card tricks- buy the decks at dollar tree they are 2 for a dollar!
4 on top
cut deeper force- taught as a mind reading trick
hindu shuffle again as a mind reading trick
you can also get a bag of sponge balls and teach a sponge ball routine but personally I don't think you have enough time to teach that.

just a few thoughts
as for where to buy the props contact me via PM and I will see what I can do to help you out.

sam,

Thanks so much Sam! Do card tricks work for kids at the age of 7-9? If they have been successful at your camp, then I guess they are! I will PM you shortly... thanks for all the help Smile

"CUB SCOUT MAGIC" (by Frank Rigney) has been "around" for some years. I think it's in the $10 range. It's written for 7-10 year old boys. Props are simple things usually found around the house. Source, any store that sells Boy Scout Equipment,Uniforms, etc. may have it, or could order it.

I've used it to help adult scouting leaders (so they can use it to help boys learn a simple trick.

If you do this right, you can motivate kids to want to go see a magician! (Good for your business, and my business! (hee hee--I'm sneaky, underhanded, devious, and surreptitious!)

Tell us more right here. Do you buy your tricks from an online catalog. What tricks do you recommend to buy other than a deck of cards. I did a camp last Summer, and they've hired me back, and I was going to buy the ball & vase trick first.

Is that school you work for still looking for a juggling instructor?

You can buy all of your tricks whole sale at D Robbins, EZ Magic, if you tell them you are holding magic camp. I have been hosting magic camps for 14 years. When I wrote a book on Magic camps in 2006, Paul distributed some of them for me. He said that anyone who was hosting a magic camp that he would let them set up an account. Remember that you must buy in bulk. You will probably need to host more that one camp if you are going to buy through him. I just updeated my book "Successfull Magic Camps, VanDoren's Guide to" for 2013. Check it out on Amazon or on this link https://www.createspace.com/4274736 and tell me what you think.

EZ Magic is exactly what I was looking for. They only require a $25 purchase, and accept Paypal Thank you very much for your help.

PS I have called D Robbins on the phone only once, and IMHO they were the rudest people I have ever spoke to on the phone.

Danny Orleans sells a book on The Art of Teaching Magic to Children which includes some helpful information along with tricks they can make and perform. Also includes pages that can be reproduced for handouts, explaining the tricks with illustrations.

Minimum is still $200 for US orders, and $300 for international orders. Also, with most items, you have to purchase in quantity.

How did you manage just a $25 order, and be able to pay using PayPal?

Robbins.... don't get me started.

Anyway, Benjamagic, you can find lots of tricks that don't cost much. Try mark Wilson's Encyclopedia - but don't take it with you to the class or they might ask themselves 'Why don't we just buy the book?"

Cub Scout book, also a great first book.

Remember those kids will be happy learning principles and deceptions, they don't need to build an illusion show for their first class
Although I taught a summer non-accredited college class where 20 kids built illusions from cardboard and performed them in the college theatre - but - that involved two weeks of teaching, 3 hours a day.

I found both D Robbins, and EZ Magic (two separate company) on a google search Robbins is $200 minimum. and EZ Magic is $25 minimum and they take Paypal. They are two different companies Robbins is in the 20th century and EZ Magic is in the 21st century.

You sound like a guy who has actually called D Robbins and had them hang up on you with an insult like me.

What a fabulous idea, and I just happen to have that Mark Wilson book at my finger tips right now.

Thanks

James Munton has a wonderful DVD called "How to Teach a Birthday Magic Class." It's got lots of great ideas for easy magic tricks to teach.

Mark Wilson's (as already mentioned) has some great ideas too.

See my PM.

Good luck with the camps!

What url do you have for EZ Magic that you speak of? I have ezmagicrobbins.com. I am a member of EZ Magic, but the one I am a member of is owned by D. Robbins.

You are absolutely correct I used the Munton course last year, and it went over so well that I gotta come up with a whole new collection of tricks for the same Summer camp this year. Munton's DVD is an excellent starting point.

Danny
I just googled EZ Magic and this site came up.

Al- I am not teaching this summer because I am getting ready for my national tour.
but I buy from FUN inc made in the USA! I too have purchased from robbins as well.

card tricks are great for the kids the key is to perform a mini show before you teach them.
let them experience the magic themselves before you teach the secret.

depending on how long your camp is and how long you will have the kids you might want to focus on one trick per day. perform, teach and then practice. then spend a few minutes the following day to make sure they got it.

one of my favorite card tricks is the mine and yours. I teach kids 8 and up.
my classes had kids all they way up to 14 and 15 years old.

what ever you teach make it fun.

oh Al I will be teaching and lecturing as well as performing at Tannens magic camp this summer before I leave for tour!
