What prop do your kidshow audiences find so fascinating that they will be mesmerized by it as soon as you take it out of your case?
I don't mean something you've shown to them before, I'm thinking of something that makes your audiences go "Cool!" and sit up and take notice right away. Does this differ for different age groups? Do you find that exotic props (like guillotines) are better at getting this initial attention, or familiar props with a twist? Or in your shows is it all a function of build-up, so that any prop can get attention if presented correctly? ("This is a very powerful magic item, don't touch, be careful..." and you pull out a hot dog.) |

I think my reactions are received from what I do with the prop and how I present it as opposed to the prop itself.
I think my chair suspension gets an interesting reaction when it is set up in front of them. I think that is more out of curiosity then anything else. Also any illusion I bring out on stage at a fair show always gets a big reaction as I think the audience knows it may be somehing they are familiar with seeing done on TV.

My clatter box that I purchased from international magic ... it has a outline of a cobra on it and the kids always think there is a snake inside .. I have a great gag/ bit of busines which uses this to my advantage but I like it too much to give away.

I actually don't want kids to be mesmerized by my props.
The thing that attracts them the most I guess is my PA sytem. They often want to put their ear up close. A lot of my props have been home made & I always go out of my way to make things look as innocuous as possible. If you are a real magician you don't need props.

Andy:
Great point. It really is not the props they should remember. They should remember you and how much fun they all had with you.

The exception might be my puppets, although even then I try an make them look natural. I had Rocky re-skined with a real possum skin to make him look more realistic.

Andy:
I also have a lot of fun with Rocky. I also use a deluxe rabbit in the hat puppet for the younger kids. When he first comes into view, the kids love him and it helps break the ice in a lot of situations. I have a lot of fun with it.

They love my rabbit, and if I produce a comedy prop that makes them laugh, their reaction is "taking notice".
I use a variety of magic wands and they really look forward to seeing a different goffey wand. They really take notice when I am in my giant rabbit outfit and it appaers I am stuck in the top hat. (Walking Illusion)

I also will have to admit that the comedy wands always get a good reaction from the crowd and are a lot of fun. The rabbit roll out wand is also a big hit.

The number one prop I use that gets their attention before the show even starts is my airbrushed backdrop. If you would like to see it PM me.

My props are loud and bright colored (no offence Andy), the kids are pointing at them before I even start. I use 2 props that get attention everytime. My Jumbo Balloon Wand and ABC Gumball Recombobulator both from Wolf's Magic.
I am working on my whole show being in loud colors, the kids love it! Keith
