As I continue learning about marketing and figuring out my marketing and promotion goals for the new year, It dawned on me that there are so many more potential markets that I could venture into for my kids and family style magic shows. I started to write a list of some of these but wanted to get other people's ideas on potantial markets for kids and family crowds that may be different then the norm.
Some of the ones I thought about are: - Birthday Parties - Day Cares - Christianing events - Blue and Gold Dinners I do have more but wanted to get other ideas from some of you.

Kyle,
If you haven't added these already... Schools Libraraies Parks and recreation deptartments Afterschool progams fairs and festivals How about venues where you do a show followed by a magic workshop for the kids? etc... These all seem very obvious (I'm sure) as most have been mentioned in some form or other in other postings. Am I understanding your question? Are you suggesting there are some that haven't been thought of yet? Hmmm? (Let me dig into my brain a little....) Here's one. I should probably push this one more than I do. PTA/PTO school carnival fund raiser Feature your magic show as a special feature in the next school carnival. The PTA/O pre-sells tickets to the show (or depending on attendance and space "shows") Your fee comes out of the ticket sales. Anything over that the PTA/O keeps as profit plus they can have concession sales, and increased profits from additional turn out to the carnival. You should offer to make the tickets for them as well as provide posters to build the excitement for the event and to insure the quality of promotion and to protect your projected image. That's what I have for now. Dennis

Great stuff and your right on track. I have started the list of everything I can think of and you touched base on most all of them I have written down so far. I did not think of the PTO route and that is one I will certainly add to my list. I was thinking that I really wanted to expand this list as best as I could because I felt there had to be other markets I was not thinking about as of yet. Your input has been great. Andy: Aww yes retirement villages are a good one. I have that also but made sure it was retirement villages as opposed to nursing homes, which may be a bit harder to do. I also had: - mall holiday events - grand opening for stores - chambers of commerce - falls into the parks and recreation area Are there any others that I have left out that people have tapped into?

You are not going to go for all of these are you? Don't fall into the trap of spreading yourself too thin. I would recommend getting one show for one market ticking over nice & smoothly before trying to add another. If you do it right you could make a living out of just one or two markets on their own. Adding more markets will give your income more stability. But if you bite off more than you can chew then you are not going to be able to do it justice.

hehehe No not at all. I do not plan on going for all of these by any means. I was just fascinated by how many different venues and markets there really was for children's magic. I was curious to see how many there really are and what ones people have worked. More out of curiosity then anything else. If anything I may just add one more to flesh out my slow times during the winter months.

Kyle,
I'm glad to hear that you are not trying to be everything to everyone. I actually edited back my original posting that contained a statement about just this subject. So many performers try to be everything to everyone. The truth is that in the end they become less than anyone expected. Andy, Are you saying that you do a children's show for retirement homes? Say it isbn't so... Dennis

Ha ha.. I do my family show for retirement homes. It is a new project for me & I've only done two retiremnet home shows so far. The routines are the same as I perform for older children. No run rabbit run or colouring in book or anything like that. But I do a good prediction routine, egg bag, vanishing bandana, a misiers dream type thing with D'lites & my rabbit production.
I did use Rocky but found some of the old ladies with their failing eye sight really did think it was real & got frightened. So no more Rocky in Retiremnet Homes. They loved the rabbit.

Bar / Bat Mitzvahs can be a good market, too. You just have to have an act suitable for the young teen crowd.
Company parties, picnics and the like. Kyle... I've sent you a PM,--- off topic, so I didn't add it here... JM

Your right. It is silly trying to be everything to everyone. It just does not work out. Andy: Retirement homes and communities are a great market to do as well. they really do enjoy the magic and love the animals. I have not done too many myself, but have friends who have and they simply love it. PB: Those are some really great and different markets indeed. Thanks. Weddings is an interesting market but I wonder how you even market for something like that. Dr. Dale: I think libraries was mentioned early on and it is indeed a great market for doing reading summer programs. Jesterman: Aawww Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Nothing personal but I will never do another one ever. Every one I have ever done has just been filled with rude people and been more toruble then it has been worth. Long story so I won't even go there. hehe. Company picnics is another great source or market and I have done a few of them over the years. Great idea. JM: I also sent you an e-mail back. Hope to hear back from you. What might be fun for another thread is once this list is complete, to post it all and then discuss ways that people have actually broken into these markets. How did they get the contacts and what did they do to get started marketing. I will say that for another thread so we can stay on topic.

You may want to just post an advertisement in a wedding directory (much like a "parents" magazine only for wedding services) And last but not least... Talk to wedding planners and banquet facilities who do weddings and who have contact with your desired market. Roving magic at the reception is a wonderful upsell item for them. Perhaps the best way to do this is set up a referal fee kickback to these people for each booking you make rather than letting them mark up your rates.

That is great information and very helpful. I really had never heard of that market and never gave it much thought. It is always great to hear about ideas others have done or know about. It helps me to constantly keep myself learning all that I can. The referral kickback idea could work for most any market and would be incentive to get people to find work for you. what is the amount one usually gives back for this? Is it a percentage of the amount booked for the show? Wedding planners is also a great idea. They would almost function the same as an entertainment angency would. I had not thought about that. Thanks for all the grat advice.

It never hurts to put our thinking caps on about new markets!
How about big toy stores or even movie theatres (Do movie theatres still do matinees?) I just had to share my Bar Mizvah story..I got booked to do a triple (3 young men) so there was about 150-200 guests. I got a big laugh right off the bat by saying "I bet this is a first...Bacon at a Bar Mitzvah! The Rabbi laughed the hardest!!

Toy stores and movie theaters is a great and different type of market indeed. Movies are great to team up with when they release a magic themed movie like Harry Potter etc.
You could also offer to demo a toy stores magic sets in exchange for publicity, press releases and promotional opportunities. Great ideas.

Kyle,
I think most people would be happy to take $25-$50 each time they get a booking for you. There is the question of whether or not the individual should get the incentive or the business they work for. I'll leave that sticky little detail for you to decide. Otherwise, I think that a generous agent fee of %20 is a fair kick back. You never know how big a booking they can get you into. I have to admit that this is one of those ideas that I have only heard about and haven't had (or made)the time to try out. I seem to have a lot of time to think of marketing ideas, It's just a matter of taking them from paper to practical aplication. One last idea I had was to apply this same payback to my birthday party market. Kind of a "get 5 full paying bookings for me and get next years magic show for free!" It looks good on paper but reminded me too much of the failed ad campaine to get your friends and family to sign up with the same telephone long distance service. Tracking could be tedious too. Good luck to you. Let me know how it goes. Dennis

Great information here. Thank you. I also like the idea of an incentive type of payback reward. I think it might get more folks working to dilgently refer bookings and leads my way. I think a percentage of what the gig pays, is a good way to handle how much the person actually gets. I am not sure I would do the 5 referrals gets you a free show idea. It sounds good, but I wonder how you would track it all. This is certainly something I may look into for sure and seems like a great and easy marketing idea. I have always had ideas for marketing, but like you, I have never had as much time to really test them. This coming year I am going to try and change that. I already have ideas figured out and will track my success and failure rates. That is the only way to determine what is working or not working and why.

The only one I direct any extra marketing towards is the Weddings, and all that entails is a smaller box Advert in the Wedding Services section of the Yellow pages, there is a sub section there for entertainers. I did get asked if I wanted a stand at a Wedding Show recently, but turned it down, it was expensive and on a Saturday which is not suitable.

Thanks for the information Clive. I have seen these wedding events and yes, the table spaces really are quite costly and at a timw when you are most busy with shows.
