I've been thinking about posting these for a while, but the idea always seems to go on the back burner. A couple of years ago I made an Okito-Berg Tipover Box for Walt Anthony in SF, and he talked me into making a small batch (a different design from his) for sale. One thing led to another, and I ended up making 12 for Stevens Magic. It was a fun project, but I did learn that my garage shop is not set up for manufacturing.

Hi George,
We have already talked about this, but let me say here that your work is gorgeous! I'm sure the whole gang at Stevens Magic is very happy to have you in their corner! Too bad you and I live so far apart...we could combine efforts and double the size of our garage workshops! Ha!! I hope these boxes do well, and I hope your arm is twisted enough to produce more lovely work like this. ~michael

Very nice, George!!! I love the rich, wood color! If you don't mind me asking, what brand/type stain is that?

General Finishes Georgian Cherry gel stain (three coats, per the directions), and then three coats of Minwax Wipe-on urethane. I picked gel stain because it "sits on the surface" instead of soaking in like a dye stain, so it tends to look the same regardless of the type of wood under it. The boxes had three types of wood, and I wanted a consistent-looking finish. And I like wipe-on poly because you can get a really smooth finish out of it. I did have a few "challenges" (read: cussing sessions) with the stain because of glue squeeze-out at the corners, but some careful sanding took care of it. *** Thanks for the comments, guys. I can't wait to get back into it... once I finish the kitchen here.

Yeah, glue squeeze-out can come back to bite you if you don't take care of it right away. For anything I need to stain, I keep a wet towel nearby when doing the glue-up.
A little tip on the wiping urethane. It is really nice to use and goes on like Tung Oil, but I found out that you can make your own. Just put some regular urethane finish in a glass jar and cut it with mineral spirits to the consistency you want. Heckuva lot cheaper. Although I have not tried it, I suspect you could also cut it with stain instead, and have a product that can produce some nice results.

George, those are beautiful boxes! Your work is fabulous! One trick I have learned that helps with the glue squeeze out is to mask the corners with tape before the glue up. That way the glue squeezes out onto the tape instead of the wood. Keep up the good work. We need more quality props like this available.

Thanks so much for the tips - wet towel and masking tape. Simple little things can make such a difference.
And thanks, Jay, I appreciate that.

George, that was very nice of you to tip your varnishing work on that beautiful piece of work. In fact, concerning your work, its the finest looking magic aparatus/prop I've ever seen and very aesthetically pleasing work of art. And I seen collectibles that were supposedely made by master craftsman.

Absolutely stunning!
Are these available now? I didn't seem them on their site, unless they've already sold out...which wouldn't surprise me.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Do you sand between coats, or get the sanding done before staining?

What I ended up doing was running my hand over the entire surface after every coat (stain and poly) to find bubbles and such that needed "elimination," and then using very fine sandpaper as needed. However, I did sand the bare ply carefully with 320 grit paper to get the surface as smooth as I could before staining; I believe that, plus using clean lint-free cloths to put on the stain and poly, had a lot to do w/ the final result.

George, very nice work! I have a hard time banging a nail without injuring my thumb - this is light years ahead of what I could even contemplate doing.
