I am trying to learn to do the oil and water routine in Mark Wilson's Complete Course well. But I don't think that he has very good patter with it. The main thing is that there is no reason for you to be pulling the bottom card off and putting it on the top. So I came up with a completely different way of doing it. Can I get some comments on this.
I say, "Red and black cards don't like to be too near each other, and that is why a new deck comes with all the reds on one side and all the blacks on the other side. When they get mixed up, all sorts of crazy things happen. Then when I disturb the cards, they tend to do funny things by themselves. I'll show you. I take the first red card, and put it on top, then the a next black card, red, black, red, black." At this point I fan them out and say, "as you can see, the reds and blacks have separated themselves." Any thoughts? I'm trying to follow the idea that every move must have a reason.

Personally I feel that patter in magic books are more or less an outline. It should be just enough to spark your own creativity but not so much that you end up relying on it verbatim. That being said, I have to disagree with your statement: "...that there is no reason for you to be pulling the bottom card off and putting it on top." The reason is that you are displaying/emphasizing the fact that the cards are already mixed.
The packet is already "disturbed" when you start because they're mixed in alternating colors. Standard new deck order is spades, diamonds, clubs then hearts(red, black, red, black). So, unfortunately your patter doesn't make much sense. You could start the routine with the cards already separated and in numerical order. Go into your patter and then openly mix them. As a final display you would then go through the process of removing the cards from the bottom and placing them on top to show them mixed again before the climax. Done that way, your patter would be appropriate. |

Ah I got the new deck order wrong! It's still relatively unmixed, and the wording could be slightly tweaked. I just don't see that there is a logical reason that I am standing there pulling cards off the bottom and putting them on top. I feel like I should be demonstrating some supernatural ability of cards as the reason for doing that.
