What are some of your honest opinions of Chris angel?

I honestly don't like the guy. And forgive me if I use the DB word but it seems to me that Angel is copying him a bit. I know Blaine wasn't the first to use that style, and he by no means invented it, but he was first to take advantage of it and become famous from it. For me it seem Criss Angel is too off the wall. And some of his magic appears too good to be true. As the song says perhaps he should "get a hair cut, and get a real job." (I can't wait to see what gets more angry responses: my reference to DB, saying his magic is too good to be true, or saying he should get a real job? )

I love his stuff. His first TV special "mindfreak" was what inspired me to get back into doing magic after about a ten year absence. It was like a revelation to me that you can become a success in magic with a darker, more bizzar style. I left magic because I couldn't stand the idea of the magician steriotypes and Angel had the same theory but more faqith and motivation than I.

I don't like him... his attitude towards magic is transparent. Similar to that of an 8th grade girl who wants to be "different" so she adopts the freak look. He painted his face like the crow in an attempt to be original but instead looks like a wrestler who is predestined to lose. He obviously is trying to get out of the self impossed shadow of David Blaine as being "todays cool" magician. His comments such as "I challenge anyone in the world of magic today" after his submerged stunt. And "If you didn't like my show, sorry it wasn't David Lame" are all evidence of his egotistical motivation to top blaine. I think he should pipe down and just do magic. As for his special "supernatural" I was very dissapointed.. not one thing impressed me. The magic he performed was either obviously edited poorly or performed poorly. His walking up the wall which I guess is supposed to be a magic effect was obviously done on a set with a few stooges pretending to be impressed. I would rather watch the special effects of a b-rate movie. He must not have a large arsenal of close-up effects or he wouldnt have performed 2 of the same effects that were on his first special. (the razor blades and kernel from eye). that's just my opinion
He painted his face like the crow?!..uhhhhh.. yeah cool |

"T" you don't realize how right you are. Instead of downing Blaine all the time, Angel should be thanking him. Truly if there was no Blaine, there would be no Angel. Angel does indeed remind me of one of those cheesey wrestlers that always loses his matches. I hate wrestling. Angel's "style" (if that's what you want to call it) is copied and outdated. I don't think of him as a magician.

I personally don't know Criss Angel; so I have no idea whether I like him or not.
His magic, on the other hand, I do have an opinion on and for me, I don't like it. I don't care for the whole gothic style of presentation, but that's his market and by all indications he is successful. I don't compete with him, because the people that hire me, wouldn't hire him (and vice versa, I might add). That said, I first saw him doing his version of metamorphosis without any curtain at all, and the presentation was dark, but the effect was extraordinary. He did it well and I was impressed with his stage presentation...not my style, but I certainly appreciate his skills. Just my two cents. Steven

I hated his tv specials, but I love his stage show. His black art is amazing. If he didn't have his stage show I wouldn't like him at all.

My point exactly. After all, there are just so few comedy magicians in the world sporting a sequened tux and doing nothing new. Finaly someone comes along and takes magic in a new direction and all of that "Dare to be different" stuff doesn't seem to apply anymore. Ironic?

There is a TV show in the uk called magick.
It aired on channel 4 It was dark but not gothic. It was great, new and exciting. Blaine and angel are getting boring. I have stopped watching Derren brown. There is always something better on the other channel. Out of them all I would say I favoured blaine. At least he does SOME magic effects and Angel always flashes. Thanks

I don't have much of an informed opinion, but here is my biggest gripe. I think Angel started as a musician and then got into magic, correct? I don't think he's that good at the magic he does, but because he so heavily appeals to the goth crowd, he has a following. Does this mean he can't succeed in the musical arena where there is much more gothic competition with Marilyn Manson et al? It reminds me of the singers that get into movies but can't act but still make money because they look stunning.

I don't know if he claimed to have the fastest metamorphesis act, or if someone else sadi he had it. Given his past, he proabably said it, but I think it is a different act. Doing away with the curtain takes something away for me, and the lights in the face bit, still masks the dirty work.
Other than that, my only opinion is I don't care for theat style in general, but some people do, and that's fine.

I like Criss Angel's shows for many reasons, one of them is...
He's different... He does it his own way... And THAT is a rare thing in Magic... But that's just me...

Cool...
I personally think that it is hard to have a magic show on tv. Magic is seen as entertainment like someone doing juggling or what have you. Though, I think it is appreciated as an interesting art, and can be fasinating. Now...Chriss Angel appeals to his audience because he's not the stereotipical magician that you would see on tv. And though, what he is doing is magic, it is not asociated with tipical stage magic. It is completely different to the general audience. It's more associated to pure magic than simple tricks or stage illusions. At least that's how it was at first when his show came out. I don't know about now. However...his audience is one thing... I, on the other hand, just find his show very boring. I can not watch it more than five minutes without wanting to change the channel and see something better. I do enjoy a good magic special like the ones that were some years back. Will |
