Hello all,
Has anyone got any views on any of Andys work? In perticular his lecture notes. |

Hi
I once bought one of his marketed effects . I think it's called Working Performers Sensory Envelope, or something like that. What I got was 1 - one incredibly overpriced envelope which ended up in the garbage bin after 2 days. Sven

I see you had plenty of opportunity to practice this and try it out then Actually, this was NOT an Andy Nyman effect,it was marketed by Martin Breese and a description of it can probably be found on his web site. Andy has put out three sets of lecture notes and marketed effects/props such as; Pro-Folio,Killer Elite,Dice Man, Mind Probe (a trick with a video tape)and more recently has released a few things through Alakazam Magic in the U.K. His effects are generally very well scripted. I honestly thought that it was Andy's.(-or maybe he came up with this idea in the first place) There were two reason for why it went to the garbage bin: 1)I just got 1 - one- small special envelope(!) which costed me 20$ or so.(!!), and it was of a lousy quality. It just fell apart after I had tried it 4-5 times. 2)The effect can be done far better and much more clean in houndreds of other ways. I have a policy about my stuff, Anything I am certain about never will be used, is given away or destroyed and thrown out. Anyway, the number of gaffed items I use today is very, very limited. Most of them aren't visible to the audience. Sven

I don't doubt he's a skilled performer, but I was not very impressed with his booklets. I'm happy I didn't purchase them partly for the quality and partly because he works to ruin your and my performances by exposing secrets to the public. I don't want to support someone like that.

Martin Breese came up with the idea independently later and arrived at the same end result in a more costly manner (it cost him more to produce which dictated his price). He had not been aware of the Laub version. I too, thought Martin's version was pricey for what you got and as you say there are other serviceable methods. The idea, however, is very clever. Of course due to variables, location of work, temperature etc. at the end of the day some lower tech. methods are more reliable. Martin HAS put some good stuff out for mentalists. Paul. |

OK, I was wrong about the creator. Thanks for updating.
I agree, the idea in itself is very good.It will work better in other countries than our, though If someone could construct better envelopes and get the price conciderably down, this could work out well, I guess. Best; Sven

Ok here is my 2pence worth,
Andy Nyman products kill if performed right, just check out the mans dvd (get Nyman) this guy can perform. his effects are very cool and the audience relate to them. The guy is a trained actor and I believe that he really is an actor playing the part of a magician which I think is all good as he plays it so well. just my view. oh also he writes for Mr Derren Brown so what more can be said!! Andy Nyman is not stupid, which leads me to think there's something wrong with your assertion. My guess is that - in common with most people who harp on about it - you haven't seen the show you're referring to. If you use any of the methods 'exposed' on it it would be fun to hear from you about your performances.

He may be a small man but he's a big thinker.
His work is very direct but requires good presentation. Not surprising seeing as he's an actor. For me his material shares common ground with one of his mates Derren Brown. He's a lovely little fella who deserves some of your cash. |

I think a reason why some poeple don't see the value in Mr Nyman's work is becasue they do not perform it correctly. I saw someone demo Killer Elite and I thought it was very poor. I then saw Andy do it and it was amazing! It all goes back to presentation.
I'd agree that Andy is one of the best thinkers in m entalism today, afterall he is one of the major thinkers behind Derren Brown.
