I can also do a full show impromptu with an elastic and a borrowed deck. Im not there to show how much I can do with nothing. Im there to go above and beyond. Im not sure I agree that all the props/effects are one trick pony’s. I also don’t agree that the tricks I listed have no spectator participation. i.e – Double Back – the magic happens DIRECTLY in their hands. Pressure: I borrow their cell phone (something extremely personal to them). Ill also perform “Airtighter” by Sankey and a few other balloon effects. Sweet N Low .. I dump a bunch of sweet N low on the table and have them choose and sign one. I enter this effect with a “coin to impossible location” (found in sugar packet) and I sometimes will perform one of Sankey’s sugar packet restoration effects (punctured by pencil). 3 Coins Across: I borrow their quarters and the final cross happens in their hands (Roth’s version). I also do other coin effects beforehand. Ignition uses their signed bill which I usually will use subsequently for a bill in lemon routine (which you can not do with a pack of cards and an elastic). Ill then vanish it and “Use Extreme Burn” to make him rich.” I also have “Killer key” and other key routines on the keychain with Ignition. More often than not I perform Juan Pablo’s “Barehanded Bill Production” as well. Twilight Angels gives them a nice souvenir for them to bring home as I make references about how much in love the look. Sponge Bunnies: Well, it occurs right in the spec’s hands, as does the revelation of LIT. So in terms of there being little spectator participation and/or variation in effects Im not sure I agree. On a different note, although I would never fathom the notion of discounting the creative, genius card slingers of past and present, I will say that times are changing. The audiences are becoming “desensitized” to the intensity of the effects just as television has become more sexual and violent to meet the attentional needs of society. I’ve learned from and studied the works of great’s like Lorrayne, Vernon and many other inspiring card workers and don’t get me wrong, spectators still get a kick out of it. I just feel that people need “more” now to be satisfied at times. We didn’t have Criss Angel or David Blaine on National TV pulling bloody quarters out of our arms or levitating across buildings back in the day. So I use effects that, through my own statistical analysis, have provided me the most positive feedback and my elastics and deck of cards did well, but not as well as when I used my props. And in my view it will always be about what the spectator wants and how I can make their heart beat that much faster. So if this amazes you .. I'm glad I was able to give you such an experience.

The purpose of my previous post was to illustrate that a) they're not one trick props, b)they have spectator participation and c)that my priority isn't to show how resourceful/industrious I can be with a pack of cards. The props have a purpose and that purpose is to push the envelope and "aw" factor. If a spectators eyes arn't popping out and their jaws arn't hitting the table then I haven't done my job.

Seems like you should check out Jon Allen's new DVD set if you think your job is to make their jaws hit the table.
