Ahhhhh! The good ol' talent contest! I've done a few in my time. Even won a couple. MC'd some. Anyway, talent shows are a great way to get your feet wet.
I used to do professor's nightmare almost on a daily basis. It was a staunch friend, and I always had it with me. Doing the effect was an inveterate habit with me. But lately I have changed years of ingrained habit in favor of Dan Harlan's "The Awakening" I love that effect, and I think a beginner could pick up on it pretty easy as it is more "moveless" than the PN. A good excercise in presentation too, as Dan gives his presentation in the instructions, but you could easily come up with your own. Dan's instructions make it easy to learn.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

Now on the OTHER HAND, the nightmare was INSTRUMENTAL in sparking my interest in magic. I was at a B.X. while I was a Sgt in the service, shopping., Just shopping for a few small items, when they had a guy set up in the foyer doing magic. He did sponge ball to cube, an effect where he predicted which queen is freely chosen, and prof's nightmare. I was totally amazed and wanted to be a magician, too. So I purchased a magic themed magazine in the B.X., and found a little shop along the highway that sold magic. I was able to purchase the very effects he had amazed me with, and was on my way..
