Drafting Tape or tape that artists use + you can get it 1/4" wide
I use 3/4" BLUE tape from Home Depot.

I too never use tape or rope to define a line of demarcation and look upon the use of such a crutch as a sign of weakness
Establish your border as your audience assembles and perform as many effects as you can right at the edge of that invisible line. They can't move up if you're standing right there. Failing that use a taser on the first kid who scoots up and the rest of the pack will fall in line once they see you are to be take seriously
