Do you like the effect where the spectator signs a quarter with a Sharpie and then you bend it? We had a lengthy thread about that and I observed that the best methods didn't use gimmicks and were based on skill.
Here's yet another reason why- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/05......f=topbar As the story notes, you can buy that very "trick" at NY's "oldest magic shop." |

I don't see the difference between that and the DVD'd, PDF's You-Tube instructions and products sold at conventions as well as video demo's sold by dealers all over the web on this very item. The average Joe who doesn't give a toss ain't going to walk in the shop and they wont show them the secret, but like all retailers, they will sell it to them if interested. Yes the times are achangin. I guess if we really want to be miricle workers we have to lift our game.

I'd suggest that a national news story is just a bit different than the situations you mention.

Understand your point Bob, but stories are written and buried in newspapers that very few would read, I truely believe the internet does far more damage to the art. Hell. only us 'ol guys read a paper.

It is an Internet story. That's where I found it- on the Huffington Post.
I came across the story while just reading the on-line news. I wasn't actively looking for magic. But I agree with your general sentiment. And it's one of the reasons for my opinion that skill and psychology are the least likely candidates for gratuitous exposure. |

Exactly Bob, and that will always be the difference between those who are serious and those who want to trivialise the art by the quick straight out of the box fix that ends up on You Tube. I did have a laugh the other day when someone contacted you about finding a secret in a book! |

I never ceased to be amazed by "mentalists" who haven't read any of the seminal works on the subject and who think that all you need to do is buy the "best" tricks in order to be an accomplished performer.
With the exception of a few of my own creations that have become identified with me, as soon as an effect gets popular and everyone starts doing it, that's when I completely cut it out of my act. |

The very first line pretty much sums it up, sad, but true for the unwashed masses. |

Actually, I thought the article was not to bad and was typical as to what lay people think of magic. This is why magic is not an art taken serious by the general public because of so many hobbyist and enthusiasts. Take a look around at a magic conventions or even Mindvention, etc. It is filled with hobbyists and enthusiasts. These are the guys that pay the bills for many of the pro's who create effects and sell them. There will always be just a small group who actually get it and the rest "think" they get it. I might even be in the group that "thinks" they get it! LOL
Thanks for sharing Bob! Jamie

There's a lot of hobbiest and enthusiasts who play guitar, but that doesn't stop people from thinking that's an art form. But that's a whole different topic.

I think simply this was an article about a magic shop selling tricks. Bob does not perform tricks, he performs miracles!
