Shame about the Elephants, it must have been horrible, still this a fellow has a great idea, which works or so it seems to me. Give Me a Home Where the Buffalo Roam

I almost couldn't get through the video cause I had to go have a slice of apple pie the 10th time he said desertification!
Anyway, I'm sure he's funded by big oil. Also, I'm sure that the elephant thing was necessary as 99.5% of scientists agreed with him that they all needed to be killed off. Great video tommy. |

So it may not be as clear cut as it was presented in this talk. Hmmm I did not think his idea was rotational grazing but rather to put heards where there was none.

On his institute's website he speaks of Holistic Management, but if you read it you'll see that rotational grazing (although he never uses that exact phrase) plays a big part of that.
http://www.savoryinstitute.com/ Anyway, I have no opinion about his methods myself, except I did find the before and after pictures interesting but not entirely convincing (e.g., in at least one case the before picture is in black and white, the after is in colour, gee I wonder which will look greener). I'm just reporting what I found. FWIW, HRH Prince Charles is a big believer in Savory's idea.

A system of grazing in which a herd of ruminants is allowed to graze an area down to the bare stubble, and then moved off, has been described as imitating the behavior of the great bison herds that once covered the American west, or parts of it, and has been tried with cattle by ranchers in relatively arid areas in New Mexico. Don't know if it works. I didn't watch the video. Don't usually watch TED shows.

Now if you're talking about the picture set that starts at 7:32 in the video, you might want to re-listen. After all, it's the BLACK AND WHITE picture that he says shows a much greener before picture. (gee, even though the color picture 'looks' greener, you can see much less vegetation, which would appear to support his point.) |

If an internet search is conducted one will find many references to papers discrediting Holistic Management. The only independent assessment of all available critics and their citations was done by Chris Gill. Gill, involved in management and with a liberal arts education, studied every citation he could locate and who in turn those authors cited. As he reports not a single paper discrediting Holistic Management actually studied, or even attempted to study, holistic planned grazing. All papers cited referred to derivations of the work in which the holistic planned grazing process was converted to a grazing rotation system to fit research criteria and the holistic decision making framework was never used in any of those studies. Report available at http://www.savoryinstitute.com site." |

For anyone who found this as fascinating as I did, here is a link to a blog entitled, "Reflections on Savory: The Science and the Philosophy", in which Savory responds and has some interesting discussion with the author of the blog.

The fact that the paper you found, that was written by a recognized "savory institute expert", supporting Savory's claims forces me to reexamine my beliefs. I thank you for that. I believe I might next examine some papers on the Philip Morris site about the healthful aspects of tabaccy. Seriously, though, do you honestly consider yourself an expert on this topic? Before you answer, remember, lying and dissembling is a sin. Or are you just latching onto it because you think it justifies your stance against global climate change / warming, or something like that?
