Hey Northern Hemisphere dwellers!
Don't know about you, but our winter came early and is hanging on really late this year. It wasn't a particularly cold winter, but geez louise it's been long. What have you faced this year?

A generally mild winter here in Ohio, but you are right, it just doesn't want to go away! Still snowing a bit, off & on.

Every winter just seems to be getting milder up in these parts, and always much milder than forecast. I recall that we had a couple of really cold weeks in Calgary back in November or December, and that was the about the worst we saw. This winter season I wore my winter boots exactly once. I don't know if winter is really hanging on any longer than usual around here, considering that March is known to be Calgary's snowiest month. Not that there is much snow to speak of outside at the moment. Yesterday I saw that a lot of casual (versus hardcore all-season) cyclists had dusted off their bikes and were hitting the roads again. The temperature has dipped down since yesterday, though.
Summary: the increasingly milder winter trend continues; not convinced winter is lasting any longer than normal. :)

It's been brutal in Southern California. A couple of days in January, I had to sleep with the window closed.

Yesterday it was in the 80s F (93F by LobowolfXXX in Burbank: a record high): very unusual for mid-March. I was in Toronto in February: lots more snow than I'm accustomed to seeing there. I'm back there in 1½ weeks; I hope that it's a lot nicer then. |

It's been a great winter. Never super cold, but cold enough to make plenty of ice on the lakes. Still had 13" of ice when the inland game fish season closed. That hasn't happened in a while. Great ice fishing season compared to last year where the lakes around here really never froze over. We've also had several good snowfalls, and even with a couple of big rains mixed in, there is still some snow hanging around. Temps were mostly brisk but very tolerable and we had a few absolutely gorgeous winter days. I spent a lot of time communing with Old Man Winter.
I'm gonna be sad to see it go, but I'm looking forward to spring as well. |

I spent most of the winter in Punta Cana and Puerto Vallarta. The other time in Chicago just for a couple weeks and it was quite mild there believe it or not. I was out the day the storms started and all the snow dumped.
In Puerto Vallarta it is actually a bit cooler than normal.

Thank you, Magnus, for starting this interesting discussion. And thanks, Marlin 1894, for the vitality and spirit of your reactions to winter.
I'm struck by the weather pattern motown reports, however. We've actually had a similar sort of winter, with a few days of relatively warm weather following a few days of very cold weather again and again. This was the sort of winter that was typical of Korea, when we lived there. The Koreans had an expression for it, which I'm probably mangling, but it was something like Sam Han Sa Won, which would mean (if I had it correctly) Three Hot Four Cold. Meaning 3 mild days followed by 4 cold days. Not exactly, but in a similar pattern. That's really what this winter has been like. |
