At the Post Office yesterday I was preceded in line by a little old lady expressing a problem. I would guess she was in her late eighties and dressed "neat as a pin."

She explained to the clerk, "I have a new mailman again -- ah, so many over the years. But I don't know his name and he is gone before I can get to the street. How can I give him a Christmas present if I don't know his name? I knit things and have to know what he might like so that I can get started."

When I later went out to my car she was standing by her vehicle -- an immaculate late 60's Chevy-2 wagon. Thinking she might have locked herself out I sidled over to help.

"Oh no ," she giggled. "I am just fine. My grandson said he would call me at four." She produced a cell-phone from thin air.

"It wouldn't do to have this silly thing ring while I am driving. Never had an accident and don't intend to start now!"

I noticed that the back of her car was filled with bags of potting soil and a shovel. Explained the need for a station wagon.

As I drove off she waved and pointed to her phone. The call was right on time. No surprise there.

Wish I could have talked to her about magic. Bet she could teach me a lot.

You don't think the cel phone was a gov handout??? Smile

She sounded delightful.

Don't know if this is the best place for this story but it made me think of it.

The other day, my wife and I took my mom out to breakfast. She's 85 and not super mobile and doesn't drive anymore and although she thinks she has early alzhiemers, to me she is still pretty sharp. Anyway, as we were leaving her apartment she mentioned a beeping coming from somewhere outside her apartment that had been bugging her. She then said, "Yesterday, someone from the apartment was in my shed to do something and I wonder if that is what is causing the beeping." (Her shed is right outside her porch door on the small porch she has.) So I said, "I'll bet they put something in there to spy on you. They probably heard about the wild sex parties you've been having." Without missing a beat, she quipped, "I should be so lucky!"

I have been fortunate to know many "old folks" in my life -- or perhaps I have been willing to spend time with them when other do not. Many of my stories are of, or inspired by these little "glimpses of another magic."

I would imagine it was probably from the grandson.

While you're probably just being snarky. Without some sort of evidence, I wouldn't jump to the negative conclusion that she was taking advantage of a government program put in place to help the underprivileged.

It is kind of scary how sharp some of them little old lady are. At the gambling spot I am always telling the boys there to beware of them.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I certainly DID'NT jump to that negative conclusion. (Hence the smiley face). She didn't sound like the type of person who would even consider asking the government for a cell phone. But isn't it wonderful that you and I can afford to provide one of lifes greatest necessities to the underprivileged! I'm urging my congressmen to get a bill passed to help provide flat screen TV's and cable also! I think it the least a good caring American can do.

I do shows for half price at nursing homes, because some day I will be in one if I am lucky enough to live that long. The elderly are our treasures don't let congress throw them under the bus.

While off topic, I think it should be mentioned that the free phone"Lifeline" program began during the Reagan administration and was expanded to include cell phones in the Telecommunications Act of 1994. That hasn't stopped the ridiculous "Obamaphone" meme from being propogated by the right. Facts don't really matter.

If she really is in her late 80s, as was suggested in the first post, then she most assuredly is taking advantage of some government 'entitlement' programs. E.g., social security, medicare, etc.

Having said that, I truly do not understand why this topic thread is titled "Entitled? Not today." Did I miss something in the first post, or am I missing some meaning of the word "entitled" here? What does anything in the first post have to do with being / or not being "entitled"?

Imagine that. I sat back and a fellow Canadian asked the question for me. Who knew? As for the phone/ Lifeline: comparing that to a flatscreen TV and cable is way outta line, I'd say. Cell phone's a fantastic, potentially lifesaving device to have on hand in an emergency, fools. Yes, I said "fools", indeed.

For me "entitled" refers to all folk who expect something without having to work for it. e.g. most younger people today. Yes, there are some government programs that might be considered Entitlements, but SS in no tone. It is a funded insurance program that would have plenty of money if its surpluses had not been siphoned off by various administrations since the mid-50's.

Anyway - I meant that here was person that did not act as one "Entitled" to anything, but made here own way, did things for herself and had tremendous respect for others.

"Entitled" is the kid next door who sponges off of his parents at 23 with no effort to even take out the trash while taking Online Course to graduate in 2017. As he is very overweight he is thinking of applying for Disability because he can't work -- never has tried to work.

Another us of the word was a contractor that showed up 3 hrs late to do a job. When I told him I would not need his services he said he "was entitled" to another chance.

In contrast, I doubt if this old lady has ever thought herself "entitled" to anything beyond the opportunity to work and help others.

I'm afraid ageism, and other "isms" are pretty common around here, Laurie. Too many people seem to believe that stereotypes and reality are the same thing.

Personally, I've known just as many shiftless old people as young ones. (Like me, for example! Smile )

Ever since I was a kid I've heard older folks complain about "kids today." It usually goes something like this:

"Back in my day we respected our elders, worked for everything we had and walked thirty seven miles to school in our bare feet. You kids seem to think the world owes you a living."

I'm going looking for an immaculate late 60's Chevy-2 wagon with a pair of knitting needles on the front seat and bags of potting soil and a shovel in the back, with a little old lady driver dressed "neat as a pin" behind the steering wheel. When I find it, I'm gonna follow it to the post office and wait for our prime example to get out, then ask her to read this thread and let us know what she thinks about it and what she's gonna bury in the backyard, too. Her timely grandson apparently is an exception to the most younger people rule. Guess the new mailman might be, too, since he moves fast and seems to warrant a sweater for Christmas.

Lifeline is a government benefit program that provides discounts on monthly telephone service for eligible low-income consumers to help ensure they have the opportunities and security that telephone service affords, including being able to connect to jobs, family, and 911 services. Lifeline is supported by the federal Universal Service Fund (USF).

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/lifeline-and-l......onsumers

I was incorrect when I stated that the program was extended to cell phones in 1994. That extension, in fact, occurred during the Bush administration:

Quote:
"Allow me to set the record straight," said Mignon Clyburn, a Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission, in a speech on Friday. "Without this program, 15 million low-income families would literally be choosing between feeding their children or going without a dial tone that potentially could save their lives and put them on a better economic path."

Consumer advocacy groups Public Knowledge, Free Press, the Center for Media Justice and the Utility Reform Network issued statements praising Clyburn for her full-throated defense of the subsidy.

The nearly $2 billion program, officially called Lifeline, is managed by the FCC and began long before President Obama took office.

Congress first enacted the Lifeline program in 1985, during the Reagan administration. In 2005, under President George W. Bush, the FCC expanded the program to cover cellphone service.

The program pays for phone service, not the phones themselves. But many companies that receive funding through the program offer free and low-cost phones to their subscribers.
