I remember seen a well know Mentalist perform this at a show one night. As the participant was taking his seat - you could hear him openly explaining to the person seated next to him what was going on!
I was always careful after that to ensure any effects with DR, were done with a volunteer that I CHOSE, not by a paper ball!

Interesting. But I can't understand WHY a mentalist would feel the need to explain during DR with any chosen subject. The whole protocol DB used can be heard.
The thing to remember also is that hypnosis should always be at least attempted (even if is has nothing to do with the effect) as it helps the subject forget what PRECISELY happened during the performance. For what it's worth the first time I attempted this (circa mid 80's) I actually hurt the subject by being a bit too enthusiastic, I was that nervous... and bad. LOL!
