1)Go out.
2)Do casual magic 3)Make them LOVE you 4)Hand out business cards. 5)Repeat until millionaire.
I hope you understand, my dear friend, that everything you are seeing is a lie, but everything you are feeling holds true.

Thanks for your posting...
How do you hand out your business card, if they not are asking for it? Im thinking to make a card prediction on the business card, and force them to pick that card, after that they can keep it, Do you have a better idea? Karsten |

You can hand out all the cards you want if the show doesn't capture them it is wasted money.

Don't hadn out business card unless peopel ask or you hand out after your performance, I hand out mine after each table I perform, but most of the time people will just asking for it ( if they like you ).

I like David Stone's method, he says in the middle of a performance to someone "Did you like it?" when person nods (if they don't you have to improve your performance ASAP) you say: "Well the don't forget to ask for my business card when I'm leaving". At the end, he looks directly to that person, and says: "Hey! I'm leaving". The persons gets a business card, and other people will most likely ask for one too.

If you want to get gigs, hand out business cards endlessly. You will average, at best, around a gig a week if you religiously follow this technique... however its very very very insecure. The gigs aren't guaranteed, unlike the rent. In other words this method is more geared towards those who want to perform part time or to supplement their other earnings.
If you want to be a magician full time then you need to start looking for residencies. These are venues that block book you as a performer for several shows. Often these bookings are recurring (Every new years eve, the fist friday of every month, every other monday etc etc). This way, with 2 or more weekly recurring residencies (that's two guaranteed shows a week) you average out the same earnings as a person on minimum wage (in the UK) but for a fraction of the weekly time investment (not considering the time spent learning magic). This, coupled with endlessly handing out business cards, leads to a very comfortable wage. This also gives you more opportunities to hand out those business cards. So how do you get residencies? The way I did it was to offer to perform for free for a month to 2 venues. This I did. When I left their sales (which had inflated) fell and the clever owners put two and two together. When they asked for me back I said I would but only if they signed a 6 month rolling contract and only if I was booked to perform for two days a week not one. This way I ended up with 4 guaranteed gigs and the owners end up nearly doubling their standard nights trade. Even though I was performing for just over half what I would normally charge (for a single gig) for two gigs, I was still guaranteed 4 gigs which in monetary terms means I was earning more than I would normally from just my standard gigs alone (just under 1 and a half times to be exact) AND I had increased the net of people that I was handing business cards out to meaning that I had an increased chance on landing Standard gigs (which I did, still only around one a week). Yes I was averaging 5 gigs a week and yes I was only earning just over what I would for 2 standard gigs, however this gave me vastly more experience performing to real actual bona-fide spectators which in turn gave me more access to real actual bona-fide gigs. So I guess the best thing that you can go to land more paying gigs is to, paradoxically, do more free ones. |

Most working magicians spend 80% of their time on doing what your asking. I would start by reading the Tricky Business section right here at the Café. There is enough free advice there to keep you busy for months if not years!

Just get out and do it, if your performance goes well they will usually ask if you have a card or web site, like the David Stone idea BTW.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Business cards are great but have limitations. For example the person will put them in their pocket, purse, wallet etc. A few months go by and they need entertainment and what do they do? The go online and search for a magician in so and so area. I would get a website, do internet marketing, hand out bizz cards in a way that makes them special that the person will be more apt to keep handy, plaster your contact info everywhere, perform a lot and have a great show. You can do everything possible but if your show ain't good you are not going to get many repeat shows. Word of mouth in a small market is crucial. Good luck.

Handing out business cards at a show for me depends on if I am booked by an agent or not. If I am booked by an agent I hand out my agent that booked the show's business card. Not my own. I have an agreement with all the agents I work for to write my name on the back of his or her business card and hand it out.
The reason I do this is because if I book by an agent - they made money off me - and they will continue to make money off me. The reason the agent and I have an agreement that I write my name on the back of his or her card is becaue often they will remember the show and that they were entertained - but they may forget the name of the performer if they just saw them perform once at this venue. So if my name is on the back of the card - they might say that they saw me - and I was great and they wanted to book me. Some agents have cards printed with their agents card with my name already on them. If I am not working for an agent and I booked myself - If it is a privet party - I give a stack of business cards to the host of the party - if guests want my card they will ask me directly - or they will as the host several days or even weeks after the event. If the host has a business card - they most of the time - will save them and hand them out to their friends that asked about that magician - that did that magic at their party. When doing any show it is a good idea to have a stack of business cards with you - however I never hand them to anyone unless they "ask". The reason I never give them out unless asked it because people do not like to be pushed - I have the same attitude toward tips - if they tip me I say thank you and accept the tip - however I never push for tips. Also, doing a great show is the best way to advertize - if one does a great show - people will most likely ask. I hope this helps.
