I am reading a book I picked up last weekend entitled Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google? The book covers questions that are asked in interviews with some of today's top companies as well as techniques to improve your own interviews. The book repeatedly emphasizes the importance of having a balance of creativity and intelligence if you hope to land one of the top jobs. One group of questions that was asked in several ways related to hobbies.
I started wondering what I would do if I was asked this question and listed magic as my hobby. What if the interviewer asked me to perform something? What would I do that would make a good impression, show creativity, use something I would normally have in my pocket, and possibly even leave the interviewer with a "souvenir" to help him remember me later. The two things I came up with were: Wonderland Dollar (or Wonder Bill). It's not really a magic trick, but it uses an interestingly-modified everyday object and can have a lot of creative story lines. Michael Close's Pothole Trick - Having a hole punch in your pocket is sort of a stretch, but the trick is very personal and you can leave the interviewer with your card. Assuming that the perfect opportunity presented itself, what would you perform that would appear to be something you did just with stuff you had in your pocket?
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Two ones to a two. It goes by various names, but you transform two single dollar bills into one two-dollar bill and then back to two one dollar bill. It never fails to fascinate. But I certainly wouldn't perform it unless asked.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
