I can honestly say that if they did so in the UK and many other chip and pin countries they would be met with a firm refusal more often than not. Lets be realistic though someone having their pin revealed in public would have to change their pin and that is unnecessary aggro. I certainly wouldn't want my pin revealed to the family or friends I went out with, would you want yours revealed? So why think a poor spectator would be happy about it. Lets look at it logically, in this routine you write someone's pin on a billet and hand it to them and then ask them to reveal their pin to the whole audience. Why not just ask them to open the billet you just handed them and ask them to verify it is their pin. There is no valid reason to ask them to reveal their pin in this routine. Particularly as you do not then verify it until much later. There are far stronger routines that will have less possibility to cause a spectator discomfort. People have secrets for a reason and will rarely thank you for revealing them, particularly when revealing that secret compromises their security. I guess it depends whether you perform to entertain your spectators or to prove your "power". Personally I will continue to avoid causing spectators uneccessary discomfort. It served me well during 10 years as a pro and 25 years as a semi pro. Mark |

How absurd, Invisible ink. On a computer?
It's quite obvious what's happened TED. Your font colour is the same as your background colour. That and the fact a lot of people are only interested in posting their own thoughts, and not in reading anything anyone else writes. Steve |

Excellent!! Thanks, Celeb - I've broken even!
Here is my ad copy for the world to criticize (don't be too harsh...I have feelings): With 3386, you appear to possess the uncanny ability to reveal an audience member's innermost thoughts. Imagine the following scenario: you walk up to a complete stranger (or invite an audience member on stage) and ask her to concentrate on a piece of information only she could know - her PIN. You then ask her to concentrate and attempt to project her PIN to you. After appearing to focus your thoughts, you write down the impressions received. At this point, the prediction is given to the audience member to hold. To make things even more interesting, you attempt to project your PIN to the audience member. Prior to doing so, you write another prediction and hand it to her for verification. Taking both predictions back from the audience member, you ask her to name aloud both her PIN and the PIN you were trying to project (your PIN). She does so and you show both predictions to be accurate! 3386 is simple to learn and does not require any sleights or moves. In addition, 3386 does not involve: *Pre-show *Billet switches *Nail writing *Gimmicks of any sort *Dual-reality *Peeks (perfect for any lighting situation) It should also be noted that the spectator writes nothing down at any point during the effect. Once learned, 3386 is sure to be part of your impromptu repertoire. |

Great ad copy, my only minor critique would be that the second billet handed to the spectator isn't a prediction as it is something already known by the performer, his own pin.

I concur. As someone who's read this, Tony's copy is superb. He also makes note that you reveal their innermost thoughts, as this can be applied to more than just PIN's, something Jose might want to take into account (would be a pretty easy way to expand it a bit).

Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen.
Obviously, I've read the manuscript as well and wanted to share my thoughts. I agree with Bill (DekEl) regarding the various possible applications. There is no need to limit yourself to a PIN; although, I realize that revealing an individuals's PIN has a certain appeal among many of us. Also, having read through this thread and contemplating the pros/cons with regard to publicly revealing an audience member's PIN, I find that I tend to side with Mark. If I were performing the effect, I would most likely have the spectator mentally form an imaginary PIN for the first phase of the routine. Nonetheless, I find to effect to be strong and practical - its impromptu nature is a definitely a bonus. While it makes use of several traditional mentalism methods, some of the presentational subtleties were new to me and can be applied outside of this effect. Best, Tony PS Mark - good catch with your "minor critique"! |
