I just use the cheapy rabbits from the "Peter Rabbit Goes to Town" set... I might upgrade to Goshmans someday... I find this is the most powerful bit of closeup magic in my repetoire... everyone loves it! and its so easy

I just do a simple two phase routine with the Goshman 3-D Rabbits. Most of the work is in the subtleties and the gags. I developed my routine over the course of a few years and it is too much to post on this forum.

Hello all,
After performing for a number of years I had never used sponge balls. I will go as far as to say I hated the idea of using them. However I was standing in for a friend who works a certain resturant every Sunday when I approached a table and the people sitting there asked me to show them, 'the one with the little red sponge balls that the other guy does' Needless to say the next day I brought 4 sets of 4 Goshman 2" sponges balls in different colours, went to work modifying a routine shown to me by Pat Page. And now have a quick, audience participation routine that uses three different coloured balls, finishes with my hands empty and reset. I use it everytime I do close up and even though I am still not keen on sponge ball routines they are a commercial winner and the reaction they get astounds me. see ya Scott |

Up to now my sponge-ball routine can start in 2 different ways... at the end of my chop-cup routine (with a little chop-cup i usally perform in closeup) when a big red sponge balls appears (and than I split it in two... more or less like described in Garcia's book) otherwise simply with an "appareance" of a ball from somewhere... and than I perform a quite classical routine with some funny gag using the name of the sponge balls "qui e lì" (translated from italian: "here and there"..so..." I take here and I put it there..I take there and I put it here...".. I think it's an Aldo Colombini's gag. but I'm not really sure!) with a classical moltiplication of balls... quite classic but really good in the audience's feedback.
obviously I do this with a person of the audience and... I don't use sponge-rabbits ciao Mauro |

My two cents worth to this topic:
Sponge balls offers both magic and charm. If you don't use a purse frame to produce your sponges, you might want to try it. It adds a great deal to introducing the sponges. My preference for an ending is to vanish all the balls in the end. I think it is just as strong as the handful of balls or bunnies, whichever the case may be, but it eliminates all that scrambling around at the end, collecting errant balls. Scotts routine sounds intriguing. How can I get my hands on those lecture notes? |

$10 to cafe members, postpaid in the US. Checks or credit cards through Paypal to greatscottmagic@msn.com or cash or money order to me at 7458 HWY 44, Star, ID 83669.
You might want to consider geeting the separate routine as well. It has recently been updated and now is eight pages with 28 photo-illustrations. $15 with all the props. If you want just the instructions, another $2.50 when ordering the notes will take care of it (instructions for the sponge routine in the notes are 2 pages, no illustrations).

i'm not sure i agree with "you can't go wrong with any of jay sankey's material".
it seems that he's on a quantity versus quality kick these days. has anyone purchased the earplugs video and really thinks it's great? i have heard of it but have not heard a critique.

Check out Frank Garcia's Encyclopaedia Of Sponge Ball Magic (Peter Marucci already recommended Garcia's booklets on the topic). I don't know, if it's still available, but it's worth searching for, because the book is filled with many techniques and complete routines for you to choose from.

fstarsinic,
I have the video. You also receive 5 sponges that look like oversized ear plugs.( 4 small 1 Jumbo size) He goes over the cons of round sponge balls and color. Jay is a littlt more serious on this video. He goes over some basic sleights but elaborates on technique and routining. I personally thought that it was very good. I've been doing sponge magic for a while but picked up some good tips. Hope that helps. David Paul

Uli Weigel wrote: It's also /the/ most poorly written book I've ever read, on magic or any other subject. *grin* So full of typos, errors, sentences that just don't make sense or seem entirely out of place, etc. I was really amused when I started reading it. I expected much more from "America's foremost authority on close up magic". The ideas are pretty good (not worth $100, I don't think [as I've heard that's what it goes for sometimes], glad I only paid $9 for it). A friend o' mine is the best sponge ball worker I've ever seen. And he's more amateur than I am. He's never read a thing about sponge balls, less the crappy instructions that come with Goshman balls. But over the years, he's worked out some unique sleights. To poke fun of how magicians are obsessed with crediting themselves with their originality by naming their effects and sleights after themselves, we've named his best multiple ball vanish thusly: John Chestnut's John Chestnut Vanish. *grin* Maybe someday he'll type up a really crappy manuscript and sell it to you all for $50, then lecture you about ethics when you don't refer to it as "John Chestnut's John Chestnut Vanish". No, I jest. He'll be selling it for $300. No, I jest again.

Hello,
The most logical and best routine with sponge balls has Charles Reynolds. It is described clearly in his lecture notes. Ask your dealer for a copy it! ESPecially and MAGICally Yours TED LESLEY

I forget what it's called, but I recommend this bag of "sponge words" that you can use in your routines. Words like "this" and "that" and stuff produced in a hand with a quip like, "you got that?" and another person is holding "nothing" sponge and you argue about him holding nothing in his hand. Funny stuff.

Derek,
Since you don't like that Garcia book, I guess I could take it off your hands for you.

The sponge ball routine I use is a combination of John Carney's "Current Classic" routine from Carneycopia and Rodger Klause's "Sponge and Sleeve" from Encore 3 or the better description in Klause in Concert. It plays very well for laypeople and magicians are often taken in by the unique moves in the Carney routine. Doesn't require a table either.
