Has anyone here owned a Ventriloquist Sideshow figure or was fortunate enough to see them at the last Vent Haven Convention?
If so what did you think? http://www.ventriloquistsideshow.com |

I have seen them at Vent Haven however as a children's performer I would never use one because I think they would give some children nightmares - but that is my opinion given the types of audiences I perform for.

This is a video link to James Eisenberg's behind the scenes making of one of his Sideshow figures. They are a little out there, but James puts a tremendous amount of work into them. |

I think they are really cool, different and original. Most don't have the capability to like something or understand why it is cool until it is already a proven quantity. ESPECIALLY in this art form. Enjoy it -- and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I agree with Matt...the Vent Sideshow figures are absolutely great...! Vent doesn't have to be exclusively for the kiddies. These figures would lend themselves very well for off-beat shows / presentations that the kids wouldn't appreciate anyway.

I agree that the workmanship on his figures is great - but they are not for all audiences. I have one of his little pins that I love! A fun way to have one of his creations.

Jimmy is a good guy and you can't go wrong dealing with him! He's a "regular" at Vent Haven each year!

It depends how you approach it with a figure such as these. Jimmy has put a modern twist on an old fashioned method. As an entertainer it's my job to entertain people in a way that is different from all the others out there (not that there are a lot of vents here in Australia).
Take a look at this video of a current owner of one of these:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4SK8e06Hhs |

"everyone has their own preferences"
Exactly - we all approach the art a little differently and that is part of what makes ventriloquism an art. If we were all the same it would be boring. We all need to understand our own contribution to the artform as well as another's contribution as well. Any artform is that way. One person loves Picasso, one Monet, I myself love Mary Cassatt but I really cannot totally explain why. It is sort of a visceral reaction to her work, that is probably what draws some people to one figure maker over another as well. Nothing wrong with that! It is not my job to convince any of you as to why you should like Mary Cassatt as well! But neither would I appreciate someone trying to tell me why I should not like Mary Cassatt. Now here is my question - how many of you need to google Mary Cassatt? It is always fun to see what others do with any new figure! I personally am eagerly awaiting my new Albert Alfaro figure! |

I love Jimmy's work. He's a real artist. I don't think I'd use one for a kid show but for adults his figures would really make an impression.
Here's one of my favorites: http://ventriloquistsideshow.com/pepperpage.html Jimmy even makes the clothes specifically for each character. Each of these is unique. Like I said, the guy's a real artist. I've been a fan for a while. I would consider buying one if I were a collector, but since I do almost 100% kid shows, it doesn't make sense for me. They aint cheap and I am. |

I would never ever dream of buying a puppet that looks like Peanut.
but I thoroughly enjoy watching Jeff Dunham work with him. Yes, it is fun and even quite surprising to see what choices vents make and how they make those choices (even the seemingly bizarre ones) work for them. |

Living in Australia and buying something from overseas that not only costs good money, but is close to your creative heart can be difficult. We've discussed on this forum before about vent builders who fail to communicate with their clients, well Jimmy Eisenberg responded to all my emails and offered advice every time without delay. He explained everything to me clearly and without hesitation which made me very comfortable about the purchase process. I know his figures are quirky, that's what I was looking for. I don't do children's shows, but I have no doubt with the right voice and good manipulation this figure will be adored. I think most figures and puppets can look kind of odd when viewing them from a photo in an inanimate state, but once they come to life can look and seem totally different. |

You should check out some clips of Dick Weston and Aunt Martha/Clarence. These characters are certainly off beat in appearance, but KILL on stage (IMO).

Jimmy does fabulous work. his pieces are extraordinarily creative works of art. I would have little trouble using one in a child's show. I think most performers liken children to china dolls. Hey, wait a minute, the latest Oz movie has a China doll that comes alive, like, how scary is that? with proper introduction, novelty presentation, and a good ability to work with kids, not for them, but with them, no problem. These pieces are silly. Kids love silly. Way too many years of soft puppet types that have swayed adults thinking I feel.Kepp on grinding those out Jimmy. Love them. someday I will own one.
