What is the best way to provide a child safety cert/background check for clients who request this when booking a show? I perform in more than one state.
Thank you.

Mike,
The requirements of different agencies will determine which background check you need. Some states have a criminal registry required for people who work with kids. You can voluntarily register and advertise yourself as having registered with them. I would register in each state you perform in. Here in Oregon, I think it was around $6 to register. Other than that, it really is up to each client. Good luck, Kevin |

Like Al said, best to wait until they ask.
But just so you know, there is no national check that works in all the states. States do the fingerprint checks through the National FBI systems, but each state must do the child abuse check separately. If you not wanting to get one for each state, provide the one you have (when asked) and hope for the best. Sometimes, just letting them know you do in fact work with kids is enough for a one time visit. Tom

Other than the school system, which has a very specific requirement, I have only been asked for a background check one time. It was a library. I went to my local police department, which was a different city than the where the library was, and they gave me a paper that said I had never been arrested by that police department. It was the most useless thing, but it satisfied this library.

Thanks so much for your responses. I really appreciate it!
A few have asked for it since I am full time and heavily booked all year round. I'm sorry for not clarifying this before. I think with more incidents happening in the news lately people ask for it more now. I will go with Kevin's advice and register in each state since I mostly work in only MD, DC and VA. I found the form for the Virgina one: https://apps.vsp.virginia.gov/catspublic Mike

I have been debating about this fact myself. Would it make me more credible to have say a background check is available upon request? I know there are websites like Beenverified.com that can do a one time check for about $20.00. But then I say, I perform all the time for childrens birthdays, schools, churches, libriaries and day cares for over 35+ years and I have never been asked for a background check.

Here in Cincinnati we have a suburb called Indian Hill. The residents of this suburb are people like the owner of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, owner of Chiquita Banana, people like that. We advertized in the local Indian Hill paper, but before they would let us advertize we had to go to the police station and have our fingerprints run thru the state, federal crime and sex offenders lists to make sure we were safe. Never had that done before and never been asked again, but we do tell people that we are allowed to perform in Indian Hill.
