I use a gimmicked cigarette I had made myself, but I thought it might look better to have the gimmicked quarter. So everbody comment on what they think the best cig thru quarter is.

Actually The Cigarette I made is VERY finely machined and cost well over $300 to make. The Only problem is that it goes straight through, and I like it to slant a bit. And I am planning on buying one and simply wanted to have some opinions on the best one.

Well, their are basically 2 styles. You have one style that can be shown on both sides,(my preference) and the other kind that can't (most others prefer). Neither can be shown on both sides while the cig. is in the coin. But the one i prefer can be shown on both sides just before and just after the effect. Which psychologically throws heat back to the cig. allowing you just enough time to switch coins.
A little known fact about the other kind is that it is magnetizable... As far as effect goes, they both rate about the same. They both suffer from the drawback of "can I borrow a quarter that looks like the gimmick". Especially with the new states quarters. I know that someone (Sasco I believe) used to make a cig. thru nickel. This would solve any problems of gimicks matching, as all nickels look the same nowadays. another side note, I once looked high and low for a screw that would go thru the gimmick. Imagine taking a coin and twisting a screw thru the center and then removing it and leaving no hole! But I couldn't find a screw that was the right size. Chad |

Why would you pay that much money to make a gaffed cig when you could of paid $25 for the quarter? It would of been alot cheaper. I prefer the coin that can be shown on both sides, but the one sided quarter works just as good.

Michael Ammar has a really nice routine with a pencil or cig through quarter on one of his videos here is the link if you want to get it
http://www.ammarmagic.com/livatmagcas.html the video is Michael Ammar Live . It has a lot of nice stuff to learn and some ideas for the floating dollar bill. Bye for now

I still use a Johnstone's Products one. Being from Canada, I just pull out a Canadian quarter and a U.S. Quarter (which hides the gimmick better than the Canadian version anyway) and ask them to check both of them intently. "You'll see why I want you to do that in a minute" I say.
I then ask the participant to push one of the quarters towards me which they do. (Magicians force) and I take the US quarter and trun it so that it is the opposite side of the quarter to where I will be pushing the pencil through - but I leave it on the table. Then I bring out a drafting pencil, the mechanical kind and ask the participant to examine this closely too. When they are satisfied and as they hand it back to me, I pick up the 'coin" with my hand that has the gimmicked coin concealed in my fingers and I pick it up and apparently turn it over as I place it between my thumb and fingers (which is really my switch for the coins) but it all flows smoothly and logically. Picking up the coin seems almost like an after thought. I push it through, allowing for the visual of it finally sealing at the end, which is a very powerful one and as I lean over to put both the pencil down and the coin on the table, my hands meet and exchange items (where I switch coins) but they are also moving to the table (it covers the switch logically) and they are looking for the hand with the coin if they are burning you, and I place them on my table. It has served me well for many years. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat |

Anyone know where you can get this Belanger quarter?
Also, where do you get the two sided one that you can't show during the penetration? I've been using the one sided kind with much success. I didn't know there were other kinds. I've been using sleight of hand to cover for the switch and the angles. Although I enjoy sleight of hand, I don't feel some magician's macho need to use sleight of hand if a more natural and easier handling is possible. Obviously in all versions a switch is made if you want them to examine the quarter. But with the one sided version, it took a bit more thought and practice on my part than I suspect the others would. Also, I keep it in a protective plastic case in my change purse, to protect the side not seen. If I got one of the others, could it safely jingle around in the purse with my other coins? |

I would just like to emphasize what the effect is CIGARETTE THRU COIN...why is it many magicians believe you have to show both sides of the coin?...the magic is not showing both sides of the coin..the magic is the fact that a borrowed cigarette passes thru a borrowed coin...the main focus should be on the cigarette melting thru the solid coin and not proving that both sides are normal...i have the gimicked coin where you cant show both sides but that's not the point..all you have to do is make it look like youre showing both sides...i performed this effect A LOT...the spectators see the magic when the cig/pen goes thru the coin AND when there is no hole...you don't have to show both sides of the coin you just have to make it look like youre showing both sides and the magic of the cig/pen going thru the coin should be the main focus NOT making sure the audience sees both sides

Chad, Bad news for you,
There are new nickles being released right now. An offset president's head on one side, and a buffalo on the other. I perform this with the Johnson quarter and always borrow a coin from the spectator and with seamless invisable switches give it back so they never suspect another coin. I am drawing a blank on his name, but Big Coin/Little Purse is one of the effects that the guys who developed one of the switches I use performs. I don't draw out the time where the cig is through the coin. Show it casually, with much apparent openess, reverse and then hand them right back. Another tip, As them to offer you a handfull of change. If there isn't a quarter to us in the pile, do anther trick. If the quarter is there, go for it. In fact, if you do two tricks with the borrowed quarter, you can ring in the gaff under cover of the first trick. Kirk |

With my touch the need too see both sides of the coin is moot. I insert the filter first and after the penetration has sunk in I then put the filter in my mouth and light the cig while it is thru the coin.

I like the idea of lighting the cig after the penetration, I've always used a lit cig for the idea that the heat is affecting the coin, but I think I might to try the other. This would really sell the point the cig is really through the coin.

It is such a clear representation that it is through the coin, I don't really see the need to "sell" it. It does create a nice visual though and addresses why they only see one side for awhile. Of course if you have it hanging around for a long time, the spectator will want to "see it" while it is penetrated. that is why I don't protract the penetration.
Of course you could always mix two gaffs and let them see it before, after and during, if you really felt the need to "sell" it. Start with the drilled version, a sleeve and a topit, switch to CTC and then remove the cig and see the meld. Then don't "give it out for examination," but "return it to the owner" without a second thought, but definately with a second move. Kirk |

While I have a Johnson Cig thru Q, I also made some simple Q's myself.
Beside making those I also made other coins that can be penetrated by toothpicks and swizzle sticks. I really can't say which is strongest. Both seem to go over well. |
