I see no problem with cakes being eligible. Even less fortunate kids should be able to have something sweet on their birthday. From some of the comments I've heard (here and elsewhere), I get the impression that many of the detractors of government assistance programs seem to think the poor should sit in the dark, in an empty room, cooking beans over a candle.
Cheap computers, microwaves, and, yes, phones, are essential to living in modern society- you need a phone if you want to answer job offers, after all- and a computer to submit online resumes (which are the only type many companies now accept.) Sometimes you need a little lift to help you pull yourself up.

So the government does not ring a bell once every month to let the people know it's time to go to the troth and get their rations?
What about the bankers, are their bailouts, rations?

Of course not, tommy- the bailouts are perks.

Ok, so there is minimal overhead. Still what is the point of regulating purchases? That adds a layer of bureaucracy and removes a level of independence from recipients.

I'll bet that there's a homeless veterans organization near you that would love it if you volunteered to entertain them. The money sucks, and the food sucks too, but you will get lots of standing ovations.

In in old days, the warriors got a share of the spoils of war. Today they get homeless veterans organization, rationed food that sucks and Al. And they love it!

Will you guys quit your crying......it has already been established that the abuses people are talking about are their personal opinions. Do I think that a nutrutional supplement program whos users are buying junk food instead is abuse.....YES. Get over it. Is it illegal, NOPE. Do I care, NOPE. Do I think they should stop the program because of it, NOPE. Do I want my tax dollars used to help fund child obesity and diabetes, NOPE. Do I have figures of the percentages of abuse, NOPE. Will you all quit crying now and be content, NOPE.

The way you talk sounds strangely familiar. The way you come to my defense when I'm surrounded by Bozo's reminds me of a guy who used to be around here all the time. Be careful masked man because we are surrounded by Bozo's.

One of our top communist politicians quit yesterday and he is going to the USA to work for a charity there. He is the fellow who came up with the idea of doing away with cash and bringing in ration cards for everyone. His brother will be the next Prime Minister of England.

Tommy, good- the US has tacked way too far to the right lately. We could use a few people helping to pull us back towards the center.

Despite its origins after WWII, the IRC has been a right-wing anti-communist organization since at least the 1960s, when it took up the cause of Cubans who fled from the Revolution.
"The IRC has some high-profile people among its overseers, including Madeleine K. Albright, Kofi Annan, Tom Brokaw, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Liv Ullmann and Elie Wiesel." None of them remotely communists, tommy. But I agree, their coming should be feared. They show up when there's propaganda work to be done on behalf of the elite.

Oh. Who's being naive, Kay?
I don't think you quite understand The New World Order. I will explain it in a moment, I have just got to go and stop a fight. Communism is one thing in theory and quite another in reality. The reality of Communism is an elite group of businessmen, who run the place as if they own it, as a business. Do you follow?

Quite. Only it's called Capitalism, Kay. Using capital to make more capital. The banksters practically invented it.
