I am looking for a decapitation illusion suitable for a Halloween show (the gorier, the better). Alice Cooper uses a guillotine illusion in his show in which his head seems to fall off into a waiting basket below. Does anyone know where I can find such an illusion or the plans to build one? Thanks in advance!

Osborne Illusions sells it as the "Monster Guillotine". Here: http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/monguil.html
I bought the plans. They've got some additional modifications you can impliment that make it safer. I'd recommend doing so- it's not the kind of illusion where you want to have a prop failure...

I have 2 sets of plans for this-- This is very hard to build---I would go with something easer and cheaper-- The Head Rush Illusion (you can make it bloody)

Bruce,
Are you looking at ths as an actual "wanting to fool the audience" illusion, or something more on the fx line to create a gory look. This would affect your options. Paul Osborne also has a number of books just on Halloween Magic... http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/books.html Rick |

I believe the Guillotine was designed for Alice Cooper by James Randi. You might want to contact him.

Thanks for all the help. This is for a Halloween show, and I was specifically asked to present a decapitation. It is not so much a magic show as it is a Halloween show. If this discription sparks new ideas, please keep them coming!

Realistically what is your budget? If this is going to be a one off you might consider trying to rent a regular guiloteen off of someone near you and sprucing the effect up with fake blood. Anything else is going to cost you to build it, and lets face it you are not going to get something like this made for much less than $500 for materials (that's bare minimum on the low side- and that's if you are doing ALL the construction yourself and good at it). Look for a youtube clip of Richiardi doing this from his "show of horrors" (something like that) which has him doing this to get an idea of the effect.

Check out Abbott's "Chopping Block". An old effect that they recently started building again.
