Ok...
I took the plunge and after 40 years of purchasing various coin gaffs, I spent more money on a single gaff set then I have ever done before. I purchased a very slightly used Schoolcraft OXF set. Here's my question. Is the small piece of the [/ assembly suppose to project about 1/4 millimeter higher than the long piece? You can see the "break." the two pieces are not flush. As per the last owner of this set, it's exactly the same as it was when they purchased it directly from Jamie Schoolcraft. Input? |

Hey Al,
I'd contact Jamie Schoolcraft directly. jamieschoolcraft@icloud.com Nice person and reSponsive. I almost bought that coin as I'm doing Eric jones's routines. How do you like the coin? Or are you trying to get past the protrusion? Jim |

I've owned [/ coins off and on for 40 years and I know what they have looked like over the years. It appears that the small piece of the [/ is attached with double sided "something." And that "something" is causing the small piece to sit slightly higher than the large piece. But without "care and feeding" information, I don't want to attempt to "pop" the piece out if I'm not positively sure how it is attached and if I can reattach it as securely. I just purchased (and resold) a brand new Johnson [/ and I removed the wax that was holding it together and replace with very thin scrap booking double sided tape. This scrap booking tape had much better securing qualities than normal double sided tape (which I have always used in the past). Bottom line is, the the two pieces of the Johnson coin was perfectly flush. I've always replaced the wax with double sided tape of some sort and never had any problem. I have emailed Jamie about the "care and feeding"... I hadn't noticed the "step" until after I emailed him... I will wait for his first answer before I email him about the "step." And after I get any info from him about "care and feeding" I will probably attempt to replace what ever material he is using for attachment and secure it with the scrap booking tape... which should even out the "step." So I may not even have to ask him about the "step." I'm just trying to be really careful with expensive coins and new coin gaff technology that I am not overly familiar with. As far as "liking" the set, I don't know yet. I've purchased Eric Jones's lecture notes with the Oxy routine, so I'll have a better idea if I like the set after I learn more about handling the coins. |

I had the same step on my oxf...I called Jamie, he told me to send it back, he sent me another 3 weeks later, had the same step on the new one, finally sold it. I bought a Lassen oxf set which is by far the best flipper I've ever seen. It's flush, looks awesome and the machining done on the inside groove is perfection.

Well... that encouraging... NOT! Like I say above... I need info about what's holding the small piece in place... preferably from Jamie. I think I can solve the "step" problem myself with the scrap booking tape... but I will not take it apart until I get the info from Jamie... or someone here who is familiar with disassembling and reassembling this coin.
Honestly... for the price of these coins, they should come with SOME info. |

Thanks guys. I love the oxy clean routine.
I have a triception set in kennedy half dollars. They look great. The only thing I don't like about it for the oxyclean routine is that the gravity flipper doesn't drop down when the expanded shell is in place. ok for other routines- not so much for that particuliar one. That said- the triception coins are very well made. Appears next to impossible to break the band (big selling point from mark). works great for triception routines, flash coins relit and others. they look good. perhaps I'll shell out the cash for some walking liberties. or maybe check out lassen if Al's problem isn't better resolved. oh yeah, another very nice thing about the triception coins is they come with a "system"= a great holdout, a special card to keep the flipper open in our pocket (nice) and some other gaff stuff for routines. also, mark goes into care and maintenance on a dvd. Al...the stuff used is is just 3M Double Side Permanent tape...Jamie has a video that he sends people usually when you buy a new OXF...email him and ask him for the flipper maintenance video

I'm looking at the material that is between the small piece and the [ and it's as flush as it can be... so... if I simply use the same material (3M Double Side Permanent tape)... aren't I going to experience that same "problem." |

Ok... Jamie called me. He answered my question about dissembling the insert, most importantly something I need to be REALLY CAREFUL about when removing the insert or else I'd be sending it in for repairs. I also got information about what he uses to attach the insert (I may try the scrap booking tape I have used... much thinner). And even some tips about using a different material for the band.
And by the way... he's really, really busy right now... which is a good/bad situation... he basically implied that he doesn't have enough hours in a day. |

The first Schoolcraft OXF set I purchased was purchased used. It had a piece of teflon tape betweem the flipper shell and the large insert. I removed it and that cured my step problem. I asked Jaime about it one day over lunch and he said that it should not have been there. Might this be your problem?

I also have at least 1 expanded shell in each that is not shimmed which solves that problem, they are easily interchangeable. I would say if you have them in Kennedy half, an extra expanded shell should not be too expensive if you don't have one already.

Update on the "step."
Well... I separated the insert / from the [ according to Jamie's phone instructions, and here's what I found. On the short piece, one corner of the flat brass rubber band retainer was bent... ever so slightly. The last owner says that the "step" was in the coin when he got it from Jamie. I'm not here to argue how the small bend got created, I'm just glad I found it and was able to fix it. I took a small jewelers straight edge screwdriver and placed it against the edge of the brass that was bent, tapped the screw driver a few times with a small hammer, and I managed to take most of the crimp out of the part of the brass retainer that was bent. We're talking about just 2mm of metal, right over the rubber band channel, at the straight edge of the smaller insert, on the corner, just slightly bent enough to cause that side of the small insert to have about a 1mm "step" when installed. Not really visible to the spectator, but you could run you finger over it and feel the step. I may still have Jamie replace that brass plate on the small part of the flipper insert, but for now it appears that I have solved the problem to my liking. |

I cannot say enough about how well made and versatile Triception is if you just think to mix and match a little. I also use the ma#^*+#c coin in Morgan with an exp [ and a super exp [ that I got from Joe Mogar and shimmed myself with some extra shim stock and mouse tape and together I have a triple threat set, or I can use the Morgan NGF instead and have a TTGF so to speak ( I have plenty of mouse tape to remove and replace shims as needed. Just think outside the box a bit and you can save $100's...

Not to get too much off topic, but there is something I have often wondered. Not just this thread but a few others. The question is this. When you buy something on the second hand market, should/ is the maker still responsible for any problems? I am only asking as a thought provoking question. I think most stand behind their work enough that they would do something - repair for free or a nominal charge, wether YOU were the original owner or not. In this case Jamie helped Al out with advice over the phone and that was very nice and professional of him, but what if it went the other way ( any shop/ any effect type ) and they looked up your info and said you didn't buy it here. Or I don't warranty used items that are bought second hand.
Has this ever been the case with anyone? I am just wondering since I had some problems with gaffs that come with the DVD that I have bought second hand and I have always just remade them myself. I am glad to see that people like Jamie are willing to help in a case like this but are there others and what are your thoughts on maker responsibility ending with original purchaser or not? Like I say, I am just throwing this out there for discussion, no other reason.
