I just wanted to share something and I feel like this is a safe place to do so because none of you really know me personally and I have a feeling that there may be some of you out there that can relate on some level.
I have clinical depression, and have had this struggle since I was 13. There was a time that most days I could hardly function, and am happy to say that now I have a majority of good days. I have always loved creating things, but have struggled to find something that really satisfied my creative bug. For about a year now I've been twisting and for ten months doing it as a full time job. Balloons are such a unique medium to work with and I find that I'm expressing myself more and more with modeling balloons and playing with designs I see. On days like today where I don't really want to get out of bed until I absolutely have to, to get ready for my gig. I find I want to get up and work on things I've seen or have been going over in my head. And that is something I'm thankful for. And this forum and so many of you on here have been so helpful and kind to share your skills, designs, and techniques with me. And for that I wanted to say Thank You! |

Thank you for sharing. Balloon art is my ZEN! Unlike when I perform Magic, where some folks refused to be entertained and want to turn it into a challenge, Balloon art is a calming wonderful way to feed your artistic soul. Good on ya...!

That is so cool.
Thanks for sharing. I was a full-time minister for 25 years before doing clowning full-time. I've counseled lots of people and got to see behind the curtain in lots of lives. Most people feel like their struggle is all alone. But, in four different churches across two states I found that about half of the people in the pews are on anti-depressants and a lot more struggle with it but don't get help. It is kind of the secret that people feel they need to keep even though most people you meet are also struggling. Anyway, thank you for sharing and I'm glad you have this wonderful outlet.

Thanks for sharing Robyn, that's really cool to hear how balloons have helped you. I'm brand new to ballooning, but I already see how calming it can be compared to performing magic. It's such a cool art form.
Curt, you're right about the secret-that-everyone-has thing. I work in the mental health field and I see how common some form of mental health disorder is, even with the employees (myself included). It's really awful that we stigmatize mental health in such a way. A lot of my clients suffer from psychosis, and it's hard to even talk to them in a clinical way about their disorder because the word "psychosis" sounds so bad. Even depression can be such a shameful thing, but it shouldn't be. It's no different than someone who suffers from migraines or allergies.

Thank you guys. I considered for quite awhile to go into the field of psychology. So for years in my spare time I studied on the subject and one thing that I always found from people who have got control over their lives again was the patchwork of medication, counseling, and hobbies that allowed them to express themselves. I've had the first two for years, but now I find myself getting better faster when I have an episode because my new career in balloon twisting kind of forces me out of it. It's been so good for my mental state.
