I am trying to locate an email address or phone# for Jack Hughes' estate. I know little about him or even if he is still with us. I am looking to recreate an old effect of his but need permission and to offer royalties.
Any help would be appreciated. Chance Wolf Wolf's Magic

Just a side note, Abbott's Magic Mfg. Co. has American rights to Jack Hughe's products. Supreme was also able to get these rights as they received them thru Abbott's when Percy helped set them up in England.
I inquired about a trick and Hughe's book with Taurus Magic. He did answer me. Remember, this is the same person who claims he owns all the Ken Brooke rights to his material, because he purchased an early shop from him. So good luck! Bill |

It has been awhile since this thread was posted and I discovered an interesting bit of info.
When I was at Magic LIVE about 4 years ago, I ran into a direct relative to Jack Hughes. We began to talk about the building "rights" to Jack's effects as there is a LOT of CLAIMS to the rights yet nobody seems to actually have documented the claims. The relative shocked me when he stated that his family was VERY upset over the the rights issue as there have been FALSE claims and they have been trying to establish the facts but have been getting nowhere. He stated that Derek Lever was issued the PRINTING RIGHTS to the Jack Hughes effects but they never struck a deal on the manufacturing rights. I will have to check on this but I am pretty sure it states nothing in the book about Manufacturing Rights being that of Derek Lever. Just the printing rights. I will double check that. At this point, I lean towards believing the relative rather than the others who make these claims. Personally, I am getting a bit leery of folks who claim they have the rights to a product line yet never produce one shred of evidence to prove the fact. I am talking about LEGAL documentation as anyone would expect. There is also an issue with the effects/inventions reaching a 25 year point when, even if patented, which most if not all are not, would not be protected any longer. I think at some point the "rights" are diminished to public domain especially if nobody is even making them. There is a certain person in magic who claims to have the rights to *** near everything, I think he collects rights, and he has yet to produce hardly any of the products. What is worse is he will not release any of the rights with the exception of a ridiculous royalty deal. Let me ask you a question, does this HELP magic or STIFLE it? For the record, if I passed on or my company folded, and the rights were sold/given to anyone, and they did NOT build them at a reasobnable schedule, I would hope like hell someone would do it, with permission or not, rather than let the creations evaporate into the abyss. This should stir up some fire in the coals. Lets hear some opinions on this anyway you see it. Chance

I failed to re-address my main question.
I am looking for any information that can lead me to any of Jack Hughes' living relatives so I may get the truth of who actually owns the manufacturing rights to his effects. My original post is very old as I have learned years ago of Jack's passing. For the record, Jack Hughes is one of my fallen hero's of magic Creators. His inventions and methods of keeping tricks mechanically simple and sound are a great influence on my work. Wish I had a chance to meet him. Thanks again Chance

Contact the Magic Circle headquarters (Google it).....they might be able to give you info or pass on your info to the family left.
I agree with all of your points, which brings to mind, and I think it might your answer,to pay a copyright lawyer (and cheaper) and find out the statute of limitation for foreign manufactured products. We did at Tannen's years ago with Ed Levy, Atty and copright lawyer and an ardent follower of Magic and the Parent Assembly and a great friend of Tannens, successfully |

Chance,
As luck would have it, I own all of the rights to all of the magic effects in the world, and I want you to make all of them. Okay. I jest. But if I did, you'd be the perfect guy. Good luck in your search.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Magiquarian,
Thanks for seeing my point of view as well as the research help. I plan to seek the truth and try to keep magic advancing rather than stagnate. There are so many wonderful creations by creators I respect. I think would be more than happy to see my take on their ideas....hell..I know I WOULD if I was looking down from the great stage in the sky

Well that has absolutely got to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!! I think you should contact "No Name Mentioned" and tell him he has got to be out of his MIND! As far as I know, nobody can claim propriety of the history of a particular person. This whole rights issue is simply getting out of hand. I have yet to see one single document regarding the rights to Jack Hughes and MANY other companies. If a person claims to have the rights, no problem, but the least you can do is prove it as would be expected in ANY legal situation. Can you please PM me as I have a few questions to ask that may help us both. I think you should go ahead and pursue your lecture. I would attend!! And back you up on it as well. Chance

I looked into this a bit but did not really find much.
Abbotts had an agreement (got the ok basicly) from Jack Hughes to mfg certain products but Greg doesn't think Abbott's ever had exclusive rights, I asked him and Hank who might and Hank suggested "could be Derek Lever". Anyhow, it isn't Abbott's (and is/was not Supreme, no rights between the two companies were ever exchanged but that's another story) |

I am going through the Abbott archives and am finding evidence that Abbotts did have exclusive rights on at least some Jack Hughes products. I am attaching the description of one of these effects from a long time ago. The Abbott archives are extensive and not the best organized and it takes time for me to find anything. If this Jack Hughes/No Name Mentioned is still an issue for you I could perhaps put together some documentation for you from Abbotts that would dispute No Name Mentioned claim. I know Abbotts would not mind if you gave a lecture or built a new prop of Jack Hughes. Of course, Abbotts would follow the wishes of the Hughes family in this matter.
As stated earlier there was never any rights given to Supreme, there was an understanding between the two companies that to save cost Supreme could build certain Abbott items and ship to Europe and Abbott could build certain Supreme items and ship to America. This was simply to save shipping cost between the two companies. No rights were ever given. I emphasize this because I have heard at least one magic shop claim they purchased rights to Abbott products from Supreme when they went out of business. As Chance says above there will not be one document supporting this because Abbotts never gave Supreme any legal or ethical rights to do this so Supreme could not possibly sell what they don't have. Any letter from Supreme giving someone the rights to build Abbott products would have as much weight as one written by the Wizard of Oz. Click here to view attached image. |

My understanding is that George Robinson has rights to most of the line (or at least did at one time)...

Ajp,
No. This is far from the truth. George was only given LIMITED manufacturing rights on certain JH effects, from Derek Lever. Read my post above for information regarding Derek Lever and his "rights" to the Jack Hughes effects. Unfortunately, there are so many false claims and assumptions regarding rights to magic these days. We really need a special online Forum to post all LEGAL documentation for those who claim to have the rights to effects or Companies from those who have passed on. I know when I go up to the great magic Shop in the sky...that my wife is smart enough, and legally covered, to not get DUPED by some of these jerks in magic that capitalize on the widows loss. I have seen this first hand and it is so sad to see this happen. A couple spends their whole life creating and building a magic company, the husband dies and some slime ball slithers in and "obtains the rights", you never see one product IN PRODUCTION again and the widow never sees a DIME years later and the entire legacy is left in a drawer!! Man, if that is caring for magic...stay out of my shop!! The history of magic effects should be allowed to grow. Not have the "rights collection" sitting on your mantle like some sort of trophy.

To put a few facts your way.
Derek went to High Court (The Strand) Over rights to Jacks material. Fact, as I was in Court on the day. The case involved one of Jacks relatives and Derek. Not my place to enlighten here. Also Supreme were taken to task when they exploited the Brooke book, they paid nothing for the rights to Ken even though they said Harry Stanley had given them the rights (Most of the content in the book was from Kens work while he worked for Harry in Brewer Street). But as stated you cant buy into a persons ideas. Regarding Tannens,,,,it has always been a known joke that Ken Brooke produced things and Tannens pinched things (Mainly Brookie items). From press published over the past years I think Tannens get the cup for rippoffs. Back to Jacks estate>>>> From memory Derek owns all of his printed material and to my knowledge nobody has made claim to his effects. Ken. (Im the guy who had a version of Toppit nicked from him by a "respected" USA magician, and couldn't give a ***). |
