Hey all you kids pros and performers out there! I have a request for you. We want to know what effects you would like to see updated and produced again in a "quality" fashion? Or perhaps a spin on a particular effect. Be specific. Don't bring up the topic of who owns what rights and why we can't remake a particuliar item. What we're trying to determine is what the workers want?
There is a reason for this survey and for the performers who desire high quality, commercial props you will want to voice your opinion, I promise! Thanks in advance for your input! |

Michael and Ken,
What type of update or change would you like to see with Walking through Ribbons or Hippity Hop Rabbits? Chance Wolf has had several good variations on Hippity Hop as have several others. What would you do different? |

Daktari,
The first thing I thought of is a new version Fraidy Cat Rabbit. I actually prefer Scaredy Cat Rabbit (the sliding door version that Ickle Pickle used to make). I would like to see one made that has different themes that could be switched out. I know Fab Magic has done something like that with the old style Fraidy Cat Rabbit with their Fraidy Cat Rabbit Outdone, but I wish one was available with the sliding door frame. Fab Magic offers 3 themes, and I think their could be many more possibilities. Not everyone would want everything, so a standard version with the extra themes sold as an option would be ideal!

I bought one of the first ones made by Abbott! It was well made. I never was 'excited' by the rabbit 'design' (I think it was Mel's art work, which was 1930s style). but I used it a lot--it held up well.
The main problem with the Hip Hops is that it works on a table top! As I "matured" (???) I got a little wiser.(???). I reasoned that one of the Hip Hops could be used as a Fraidy Cat, and the prop would be much simpler ( no hinges, no latches, no magnets, ETC.) I removed the base from the black rabbit. I made a cover (looks like an oven 'mitt' without a thumb) of padded cloth. That's all I carry when I use this effect. The other rabbit and the two wooden tubes are in a trunk somewhere in storage. You can do the necessary steal with the mitt,(not necessary to show it "mt") and after the ovation has died down, the cover which was whipped off and laid down, is placed back on the bunny and it's packed and automatically set for the next show. I've shown this idea in my lecture for some years now. Those who've seen it, liked it. If you make 'em up, I would accept one as a royalty for the idea. Packs flat! No table needed! Can even be done surrounded (hold prop in front of chest)! No set up! Packs small, plays big!

I do a variety of tricks to promote healthy eating. I do a version of STRATOSPHERES with a yellow, red and green apple. The bandana (banana) trick. I built my own version of grant's uncola that I call the soda factory in which in I turn blocks that say S_O_D_A on each side, to saying L_I_F_E then turn into a glass of water and carrot sticks. I have more.

I forget the manufacturer, but I had a great blendo effect that I lost one of the gaffs for... It's three colors, diagonal (not the cheesy foursquare one) and no t***b t*p. It's no longer manufactured and I've condsidered trying to make my own replacement. It was a staple of my kids show and I miss it terribly.
Also I'd like to see a larger sized coloring book that just looks like a real coloring book. |

I'd love to get hold of a modern version of "Neptune's Chest", which works in a similar manner to the vanishing box in "Stratosphere" - although the flaps drop down, not sidewards.
I came up with a concept for a m******c load chamber, which would eventually be removed/produced, meaning that the entire box could (if you wanted) be handed out for examination. At least, it would be possible to show the entire prop very cleanly. It's a fab production item, I used it all the time when I was a kid, but I don't know of any manufacturer currently. |

I always thought a great second climax for HH rabbits would be after you turned the rabbits around to reveal the color change, turn the covers around and they too, have changed color.

How about an updated version of Spectral Seamstress (Spools of Thread). Check Rice's Encyclopedia. (Beat you Gerald!)

It's interesting to note that the perennial favourites for re-invention, or re-dressing are:
Run Rabbit Run Elusive Rabbits (Hippety-Hop Rabbits) Farmyard Frolics all incidentally invented in England, as was the Square Circle production prop ... and the Paper Hat Tear ... and Silver Sceptre. And the world's leading suppliers of magical apparatus for children's entertainers were and are also based in England. Supreme Magic from the early 1950s until the early 1990s and today Practical Magic. Coincidentally both based in the middle of nowhere. Albion Magic and Razamatazz (both English companies) also have some excellent children's props. Albion run Kidology and sadly Razamatazz have announced they are winding down their business at Kidology in a couple of weeks time. |

Roger. I was only in The Ruskin on the Sunday. Hope to get to the full event next year.
I do miss the old days of Edwin and Supreme. The nearest thing we have to Edwin is John Kimmons. |

Everyone has been using the same classic tricks with the same characters on them for 50 years. The classics became classics for a reason. They are terrific effects that have stood the test of time. But while a picture of a rabbit for example is symbolic to magicians, if we are truly being honest with ourselves, I frankly think kids could care less unless it's truly alive.
If you want the kids to care, find a way to replace all the hokey boring characters used on most classic tricks with characters that actually resonate with kids today and make them laugh just seeing them - characters like Mario, Sonic, Scooby Doo, or Tom & Jerry just to name a few. In fact, it would be cool if there were effects out there just based on cartoon characters, since these are the very characters that kids watch every day when they want to laugh - which just so happens to be our goal as well! - Gary |

...but with the cartoon characters you need to be concerned with copyrights and licensing agreements. Remember the Cookie Monster, Yogi Bear and Elmer Fudd & Bugs Bunny?

I know, but the original poster asked for our honest feedback, disregarding who owns rights to whatever. So that is what I provided.
But to your very point, my favorite trick in my show is still my Run Cookie Monster Run because all the kids go crazy over the Cookie Monster that they know and love. I thank my lucky stars that I acquired that effect before it was pulled off the market due to copyright issues. |
