Let me add that I am quite ignorant of much of this realm of consumables, so my terms, etc.., may be way off. Anyway, I have tried a number of...would the main word be "whiskeys"? I've tried Crown Royal, Southern Comfort, Irish Whiskey, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels.
Today, after remembering some of S2000 Magician's posts, I bought a bottle of McClelland's Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. I'm sorry to say, I'm enjoying it the least of the bunch. If car exhaust could be distilled into a liquid, this would be it Seriously, though, it is exceptionally smokey tasting. I'm wondering what the best way to enjoy it might be. Don't get me wrong, it is not horrible or undrinkable to me. It just doesn't taste very good...to me. And just so people can get an idea of how my tastes seem to run, my favorite so far seems to be bourbon. Jim Beam is my favorite of the above-mentioned drinks, so far. Haven't ventured really beyond JB, yet, as far as bourbons go, but we'll see. The Irish Whiskey was pretty flavorless. Jack Daniels didn't light any fires. The taste of bourbon had kind of a "character" (whatever that means) that I like. Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I'm not a fan of the single malt Scotches either; I found them to be coarse and I didn't enjoy them, despite that my youthful liquor of choice was good 12 year old Scotch like Chivas Regal, JW Black, etc. But I also outgrew my taste for Scotch and my favorite now is Jack Daniels. I like the flavor; it's smooth and I particularly enjoy sipping it on the rocks.
I'm not an Irish Whiskey fan and I find it has a similar taste to Scotch. As for Southern Comfort, I could never understand the taste for it or why it was the drink of choice for Janis Joplin. To each his or her own I guess. I think it's more of a cordial than a liquor but I'm not sure of that either. The new thing in Bourbon the last few years has been Maker's Mark, which I tried but didn't find anything special about it. Also, so called Rye whiskeys, the original liquor of the colonial times in America and which has traditionally been looked down upon is making a comeback with some labels being quite pricey. I tried one, I forget which, except that it was expensive and I found it to be much coarser than my favorite Jack. Enjoy the journey, and drive safely. ;-)

It's the peat/smoke that lovers of the Islay whiskeys like. I think it's an acquired taste. My wife, who doesn't drink, tried a taste of my Laphraig the other day and said, "that's yummy, reminds me of leather"--interpret that how you will...
Try a small shot with just a tiny bit of water and sip. You might warm to the taste.

I started drinking Scotch about 3½ years ago (arguably a bit late in life for someone named Campbell), after I'd been invited to a Macallan Scotch tasting. A friend of mine - another magician - said that I couldn't go to a Macallan tasting having never tried Scotch, so he suggested the I get an inexpensive single malt - Dewer's, for example - and drink a shot a day for a week to start to acquire a taste for it. I liked it on the first sip.
My next Scotch was a 10-year-old Laphroaig (Magnus: note the spelling); I had no idea that Islay Scotches were so smoky, but that turned out to be wonderful: I'm a big fan of Lapsang Souchong, so the flavor was right up my alley. I've never tried McClelland's, so I cannot comment on it intelligently, but I like a number of Islay Scotches: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, and Caol Ila; Talisker from the Isle of Skye is similarly smoky/peaty. I also enjoy some (distinctly non-smoky) Speyside and Highland Scotches: Aberlour, Tormore, and Oban. I've found some that I consider so-so, including (apologies to Whit Haydn) Glenmorangie, and Glenlivet. I dislike Glenfiddich, as did the two ladies from Aberdeen on a horse drive in Idaho almost 3 years ago who introduced me to Tormore. If I were introducing someone to single-malt Scotch, I'd start with something more benign, such as Macallan, Tormore, or Oban. I'd leave the more strongly flavoured Scotches for later. |

Meh. It's probably a Gaelic word from pre-literate days. Spelling is oppression.

Chessman, I'd suggest some Woodford Reserve as your next try in the Bourbon world. A dollop or half-shot in your coffee makes it amazing, and it makes a great Manhattan. It's about $28-$30 a fifth. I agree with Bob about Maker's Mark. It's fine, but I'd rather get another brand, trying for better, than a repeat bottle of it. So far, for me, Woodford's hasn't been beat.
Vya Vermouth is a nice alternative to the regular Vermouths if you're into mixed drinks. Ryes and Irishes need to be cheap and raspy for me to like. Bottom shelf. They have the proper taste for water dilution: Cheap Rye and water on Ice...almost like a scotch. Rasssspy. Makes me want to write short stories.

The art of blending whiskys, each of which varies from year to year, in order to produce a consistent product that has the same flavor characteristics year in and year out, seems to me a nobler accomplishment than simply bottling any one of those whiskys by itself. But I do enjoy a single malt, too. The Green Label, which is blended from only 4 whiskys, is sort of a compromise.

I enjoy more blends than single malt Scotch.
My favorite Scotch is Dewar's white label. Dewar's green label is even better but is a little out of my price range (most of the time). Iven

One Bourbon I really like is Woodford Reserve. It's made by the same company that makes Jack, Brown-Forman.

A newer Bourbon I like is Makers 46. It's a spicer Bourbon.

Although my favorite is Glenlivet, neat, I risk the ire of scotch whisky connoisseurs with a concoction I serve to those who find the taste a bit too earthy...
1 1/2 oz Scotch 1/2 oz Drambuie twist lemon peel Commonly referred to as a Rusty Nail, I enjoy it as well. Drambuie, incidentally, is a liqueur which has a scotch base, so blends well. Perhaps worth a try... Jim
