I would suggest also reading period books. From an SCA perspective (no Ren fairs around here), if you want to be knowledgeable about historical magic, the most important way is to actually read the books from the time. Hocus Pocus Jr is a must-read. The relevant section of Dicoverie of Witchcraft is also vital.
The other really useful resource is going to be artwork from pre-1600 that shows magicians. I have a couple of favorites, but I'm going to let you look for your own first. Post a couple of good ones and I'll share what I think is the best for repertoire (though it does not address actual technique). Other than that, put some tricks together that at least look the part (no plastic, no references to modernisms, period-looking cards, etc.) and show a few people what you do. Then think it over a little and do it again. Make the changes you think matter. -Patrick |

The Known World Handbook? Show Doctor? Depends on what you want to get out of the books. There are tons of good books about SCA, Ren Fairs and Magic seperately but very few that combine them. I need to get my hands on Mr Palmers book and Master Paynes book. I havent seen any others like them.

Edward Claflin and Jeff sheridan "Street Magic - an illustrated history of wandering magicians and their conjuring arts" contain a lot of useful images and information.
Arthur F. Kinney "Rogues, vagabonds & sturdy beggars" contain several book for the late 1500s and early 1600s that can held picturing the ambiance of this era. Samuel Rid "The art of juggling" is in this book. Marjorie Rowling "Everyday life of medieval travellers" has an interesting chapter on wandering entertainers. |
