During the first half of the XIX century, the French magician Miette made his fame by loading coins in the French cuffs of spectators (as accounted for by Nicolas Ponsin)! Eddie Joseph adressed this high impact magic involving the audience in a booklet. Gary Jones revived the feat in a very classical way. Shoot Ogawa and Apollo Robbins load the shoulder as does now Eric Jones who loads the wrist the shoulder (twice) and then the breast pocket.
Such a practice is much more acceptable than the pick pocketing which contributes to keep alive a bad reputation for magicians gained by their support or performance of money swindles and use of the crowds assembled by witch doctors to cut their purses off. Audience participation when it is metaphorically positive (a coin that goes to a spectator's pocket expresses that magic is symbolically making him richer) has a huge impact. In this line, I've found a new way to achieve such a feat. The assisting spectator is explained that if he commits to keep the secret under every circumstances, during and after the show, he will be taught a really professional magical effect. The performer holds three coins visible: two at the fingertips of one hand (but actually three) and one at the fingertips of the other hand. The two (acctually three) are placed in the spectator's hand which the performer closes. The spectator is requested to place his hand in his pocket... release the coins... and take his hand out showing it to be totally empty. The last visible coin is false transferred and allegedly placed in the assisting spectator's other hand (which the performer closes over nothing: but the spectator at this stage doesn't know yet what to expect). The spectator now is shown how to toss the coin in the air ... (where it seemingly vanishes) and to check his opposite pocket where he find the three coins that he unwillingly loaded himself. He has "magically transferred a coin from one hand to his opposite pocket. Blending such an effect in a routine after some Eddie Joseph/Gary Jones effects is killing. Now it is possible, at the beginning of the routine, to request the assisting spectator to place a Nicholas Einhorn Nest of Wallets in his right jacket pocket. For the finale, after several travel of coins to the spectator's pockets, a coin is marked asking to draw a beard or some glasses and to initial his Andy Warhole type of work of art. The coin is vanished and the spectator is requested to take out the wallet that was entrusted to him at the beginning of the routine... He takes it out and the performer feels grateful to Nicholas Einhorn for his nest of wallet effect when the marked coin is found at the very heart of the nest into the piece of cloth.

Lawrence, Thanks for sharing! This sounds like a killer routine. I've been wanting to pick up the Nest of Wallets. Now I have another reason.

Thanks Lawrence. I like the idea of using nest of wallets. Forgive my shallow knowledge on products, it'sis there anything in the market that can achieve the same i.e. given to the spectator and load it afterwards?
Cheers, Kened |

Yes there is.
Tommy Wonder used the principle at the end of his Ambitious card routine, doing a sort of shuttle pass between the box and the hand. That principle was brought a little further by John Bannon, who has a similar gimmicked box (you could stick a coin to a thread and shake it after it is open) and has it nested in a set of regular everyday boxes. Now Nicholas Einhorn has been one step further and I really like what he has come up with All the other techniques (nest of boxes, plates...) require a slide and therefore that the box or wallet is in one of the performer's pocket

John Bannon's idea sounds good. it's a shame then the coin can't be signed on both side by the audience.
FYI nest of wallets is not Nick Einhorn's idea he only made an existing product better and marketed well. |

I think Mike Close's Big Surprise routine pushes this idea even further, with the idea of a signed contract between the performer and spectator, not to peek at the Big Surprise (which is a can containing something), it becomes a running gag through his show, they shake the can verifying there is something inside. At some point he can't find his pen cap. At the end of the show they open the Big Surprise can and find his pen cap and their signed contract inside. I know this has nothing to do with coins, but thought I'd mention it since it does fit the above requirements. I have thought about this before. To me a signed coin to impossible location, just doesn't seems as strong as a signed card, bill, or a piece of paper. I have no idea why, maybe because a coin isn't something you would normally sign ? Maybe it's just me, but having a coin signed in the middle of a routine seem like it interrupts the flow of the routine, but seems perfectly fine to have a card signed. Any thoughts on this ?
Thanks, Joe

I really like the idea, thanks Lawrence.
You may find interesting some Luis Piedrahita routines with signed coins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpm4TpyLqlY (Coins Across with signed Coins, with Bailaor Joaquin Cortés) Signed coin to impossible location here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNrV7m9XIFg (Coins through glass table with signed coins, with Kylie Minogue) And maybe some of the principles he uses in these two videos could be applied to what Lawrence has shared. |
